Man killed in plane crash identified
An aerial photo shows the location of Tuesday's plane crash in Gordon County that claimed the life of a Calhoun man. The plane crashed to the right of the runway shortly after takeoff.
Authorities say Roy Gardner Russom, 76, of Calhoun was killed around 2 p.m. Tuesday when his single engine plane crashed shortly after taking off from Tom B. David Airport in Calhoun.
Russom died as the result of blunt force trauma related to the crash, according to deputy coroner Bo Nicholson.
Nicholson said the Calhoun Police Department, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating how the plane crashed.
Russom was the only occupant of the plane, Nicholson said.
Police and federal officials say Russom's single-engine plane crashed and burst into flames west of the airport.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the amateur-built aircraft crashed in the woods.
Bergen says the plane burst into flames and was destroyed.
