THINK BIG DREAM BIGGER
"Life is So Interesting"
Unconsciously, most of us choose what is the safest path instead of an uncertain path.
I’ve been guilty of this myself, and I understand why taking a safe and secure path is a good decision for a lot of people. But the thing about the safe path is that almost everyone is on it.
This is why it feels normal to not dream too big, or reach too high. Because there is always someone there to remind us that we can’t reach those lofty goals.
In reality, those people don’t want to see us prove them wrong, and without realizing it, they are trying to pull us down to their collective reality, like crabs in a bucket that prevent others from escaping.
We’ve heard it said that if you always do the same things, you’ll always get the same results.
This is true for our lives and our careers as well.
"Truth be told, I probably would have never gone into business for myself if circumstances hadn’t pushed me in that direction. But now that I’m here, I want to make the most of it possible."
Who Dares, Wins
Have you ever noticed that wildly successful people usually have even more ambitious goals as their target?
Sometimes these goals are so ridiculously out of reach, that they don’t seem to make rational sense. Yet there are people who dare to dream this big.
Now, not every business out there may dare to dream as big as these entrepreneurial giants, but I’ve met plenty of normal looking people right here in Sacramento (and beyond) who have pretty lofty goals.
These business owners have visions of accomplishing things that are beyond their current circumstances. But in talking to them, you’re 100% convinced that they can pull it off, and realize their visions.
"Having big dreams forces you to take radical steps to achieve those goals. It forces you to take actions that are beyond settling for “good enough”.
The bigger your ultimate goals, the more it forces you to change your current behavior. The larger your aspirations, the longer timeline you start thinking on.
A New Reality
Let me be clear, I have all the respect in the world for people who do what they have to do to make ends meet. These people are everyday heroes in their own right.
But for those people who own a business, what’s your long-term goal for your own business? And what is the motivation behind wanting more than you currently have?
Ponder how you would fill in these blanks below, and how differently would you act if this was your new goal.
It’s important to think about why you want the long-term goals that you do. Wanting to achieve what you see other people achieving will not be a strong enough motivator to get you all the way to the finish line.
A Warning
Dreaming bigger about what you want to achieve is dangerous and potentially life-altering. You may create enemies you never knew you had, who don’t want to see you achieve these things.
You may also find new allies, who are drawn to your enthusiasm and courage. These allies may share your vision, and may be instrumental in helping you reach your long-term goals.
Also be on the lookout for friends and family who try to pull you down to earth. They may be trying to protect you from harm or disappointment, and they may mean well. If they also believe in your dreams, life will be easier for you.
Think About It
If the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, and our own fears — of failure, ridicule, or even success — are what keep us on our current path, what can we do to take on those fears head-on?
Most Importantly
Remember, no one has the power to determine your destiny but you. Believe that.
