A retired TWA Pilot Captain Russell Hazelton, from Pennsylvania is dead in Piper PA 28 Cherokee single-engine, with wife Suzanne Hazelton,

Russell Hazelton, 78, whose primary home was in Factoryville, Pa. but who had a secondary home in Town & Country, died early Thursday at SSM DePaul Health Center in Bridgeton, Major Bill Carson, deputy chief of the Maryland Heights Police Department, said.

His wife Suzanne Hazelton, 69, is in critical condition, Carson said.

A retired TWA pilot from Pennsylvania is dead and his wife in critical condition after their small plane crashed and flipped over in Creve Coeur Lake the night of Oct. 24.

"The two had flown out of Pennsylvania, stopped in Ohio for fuel, and their destination was Creve Coeur Airport near the park," Carson said.

"The FAA is on scene and awaiting arrival of an National Transportation and Safety Board  investigator, and they will conduct a full investigation to determine the cause of the crash," Carson said.

A witness told police she saw the plane  overhead and heard the engine sputtering.

"We don't know if the plane was running out of fuel or having engine problems," Carson said.

"To the witness, it appeared as if the pilot was possibly trying to make an emergency landing on the beach and instead touched down on the water, but flipped over and started sinking."

Police officers were called out at 8:40 p.m. to the north side of the lake, near Sailboat Cove.

Police officers found the Piper PA 28 Cherokee single-engine, four-seater airplane upside down about 40 or 50 feet from shore, with most of the plane underwater, Carson said.

After officers were unable to get the door open, six of them were able to drag the plane closer to shore and lift it to get the cockpit out of the water.

They were aided by firefighters, including those from the Maryland Heights and Pattonville fire protection districts, he said.

"A firefighter used a tool to force the door open to get inside the cockpit, where a man and woman were strapped into their seats," Carson said.

Fire district paramedics began resuscitation, after which the pair was taken by ambulance to DePaul Health Center.

"While it was a valiant  effort by police and firefighters to get the people out, unfortunately, they likely had been underwater for several minutes," Carson said.

A judicial commission probing mysterious death of two boys at Sant Shri Asaram Ji Bapu Ashram in Sabarmati rejected the godman's plea for recording his statement at the Ashram.

A judicial commission probing mysterious death of two boys at Asaram Bapu Ashram in Sabarmati today rejected the godman's plea for recording his statement at the Ashram.

"The demand and suggestions put forward by Asaram cannot be accepted as it seems just another ploy to delay his appearance before the commission to depose," Justice (retd) D K Trivedi Commission said while rejecting the plea of the controversial spiritual guru.

Cousins Dipesh and Abhishek Vaghela, both residents of Asaram's Motera Ashram, were found murdered on the bed of Sabarmati river in July 2008. The state government had constituted the commission after a huge public outcry over the deaths.

The Commission also made it clear that Asaram will be called for his deposition after his son Narayan Sai appeared before it on November 8.
The panel also rejected the plea of the father-son duo seeking a stay on the order so that they can challenge it in the high court.

In his application, Asaram Bapu had given three options, including recording his statement at Ashram, for his cross-examination.

He had requested the commission to either appoint a representative to record his statement, or the chairman himself record his statement at the Ashram in Sabarmati or it should be recorded via video conferencing.

The commission had issued summons to Asaram, along with Narayan Sai, to appear before it for cross-examination in the case, however the father-son duo has delayed their appearance on some pretext or the other till date.

Parents of the deceased cousins had alleged that the boys were "sacrificed" as the part of some "black magic ritual" and held Asaram directly responsible for their death.

Atlantic Aviation plans Airport investment

Atlantic Aviation plans major investment in new facilities to serve general aviation traffic at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

The company headquartered at Plano, Texas, is making its move after the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority put the kibosh on a development deal with Million Air, which was planning $20 million in facilities to serve private aircraft.

The airport’s staff on Oct. 17 told Million Air that it was terminating the company’s leases, including the lease of property near Rock Boulevard and Mill Street that was to be the site of the expansive general-aviation facility.

The airport expects to take possession of the Million Air premises this week.

In mid-summer, airport executives said that Houston-based Million Air had missed deadlines to submit plans for the facility and was late in payments to the airport.

Million Air had said it expected to open the first phase of the $20 million general-aviation center, including hangars, fueling operations, meeting rooms and offices, next spring. Although a taxiway was built to serve the site, no other construction had begun.

The company’s headquarters did not respond last week to a request from Northern Nevada Business Weekly to provide further details about its operations in Reno.

Atlantic Aviation, a long-established company on the airport, will continue to sell fuel, both for general aviation craft as well as the passenger and cargo craft that use facilities on the west side of the airport.

Brian Kulpin, a spokesman for the airport, said Atlantic plans a multi-dollar expansion of its facilities in Reno, including major new facilities along Rock Boulevard on the east side of the airport. A company spokeswoman didn’t respond to a request last week to provide more details about its plans.

While some aircraft owners worry about possible price-gouging if Atlantic is the only fuel provider at the airport, Kulpin said the company slashed $1 a gallon off the price of a commonly used aircraft fuel delivered to planes based at Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

Atlantic also will manage the general aviation hangars at the airport.

While the Million Air facility had been seen as one of the building-blocks of a cluster of general-aviation companies at the airport, Kulpin said the failure of that project doesn’t harm the airport’s economic-development strategy.

Along with a stronger presence by Atlantic Aviation, the airport has seen development of a major maintenance facility for Dassault aircraft as well as a jet-maintenance facility operated by Western Jet of Van Nuys, Calif.

Kingfisher told to compensate a Bangalore flier

Kingfisher Airlines has been asked to compensate a Bangalore passenger for having failed to inform him in time about the cancellation of a Chennai-Port Blair flight in February this year.

A consumer court recently directed the airlines to pay Rs 13,000 to Sqn Ldr (retd) Devendra Goyal, resident of Vidyaranyapura, for causing him mental agony by not disclosing the status of the flight in spite of his efforts to make enquiries with the staff.

Goyal was forced to cancel his ticket two days before the date of journey after attempts to contact the airline authorities failed.

The complainant had booked tickets with Kingfisher Airlines but later had doubts over the flight operating on schedule. "When he wanted to verify, it was the airline's duty to reply and confirm that his flight was indeed on schedule. But the airline did not respond at all to the complainant's efforts to verify the real position, and he was kept in the dark," the judges observed in their August 14 order.

"The complainant had already made arrangements for hotel reservation and other things at Port Blair, and the payments made were not refundable," the judges said. The complainant was put to mental agony because there was no certainty about his trip, they added.

"If the flights were on schedule, the airline could have, at least, confirmed the same... The airline failed to discharge its duty, and in our opinion, it amounted to deficiency in service," said president T Rajashekharaiah and member H Shivalingappa of the 3rd Additional District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum.

The airline was told to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation for causing mental agony and Rs 3,000 as costs to Goyal.

NO COMPENSATION AS YET

Kingfisher Airlines had been asked to pay compensation within 30 days. It hasn't happened as yet. Nor have I received any intimation about the order being challenged.

Sqn Ldr (retd) Devendra Goyal

WHAT'S THE CASE

Sqn Ldr (retd) Devendra Goyal purchased a ticket for a Kingfisher Airlines flight from Chennai to Port Blair on February 26, 2012. On hearing about en masse cancellation of Kingfisher flights, Goyal made repeated calls to the airline's helpline to ascertain the correctness of the news. But he got no reply.

In his complaint, Goyal alleged that he'd planned the holiday in advance and the money paid for hotel reservation wasn't refundable. Hence, he had no alternative but to buy tickets from other airlines. On February 26, the date of the journey, Goyal was informed about the flight cancellation.

Karen Alexander Daughter of Piploted by Captain Ken Sabin, 70, of Chehalis, trains in K-9 to honor searchers for dad's crashed plan

Daughter trains in K-9 to honor searchers for dad's crashed plane
Karen Alexander and her year-and-half-old German Shepherd, Sockeye, are training in an attempt to follow in her father's shoes — one rescue mission at a time.

Karen Alexander and her year-and-half-old German Shepherd,

Two years after the plane crash north of Morton that killed three men, the daughter of the man who Piloted the plane is working to train her German shepherd to become a search and rescue dog as a way to honor the community members who aided in the search for the plane's wreckage.

It was their efforts, she says, that ultimately gave her family the opportunity to find closure.

On Wednesday, the day before the two-year anniversary of her father's death, Karen Alexander and her year-and-half-old German Shepherd, Sockeye, ran around her property demonstrating the training it takes to become a K-9 team.

"I've been wanting to do something for all the people out there that day," she said. "When I got Sockeye, I thought, 'This is it.' "

The plane, owned by Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute in Chehalis and piloted by Ken Sabin, 70, of Chehalis, was traveling from Chehalis to Lewiston, Idaho. The two passengers, PCLI laser technician Rod Rinta, 43, of Chehalis, and Dr. Paul Shenk, 59, an eye surgeon from Woodland, along with the pilot, were all killed.

When the plane initially disappeared into a heavily wooded portion of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, a massive search and rescue effort led by the sheriff's office saturated the area as family and friends of the three men hoped and prayed for a miracle.

Eventually the wreckage was located nine miles northeast of Morton. The site was accessible only by foot, and rugged terrain meant it took six days to fully recover the wreckage.

While the search teams did not find the men alive, Alexander said, locating their remains gave her and her family closure; because as she explained, not knowing is always worse.

"It was so selfless of them," she said. "Our county is full of selfless people."

Before her father's death, she said, she did not realize how many people he impacted during his lifetime. About 1,000 people attended his funeral.

After his death, community members began to share their stories with the family about how Sabin had helped them. Many told stories about Sabin when he worked at Security State Bank, where he worked for more than 30 years, giving people financial chances that others wouldn't; in turn allowing them life opportunities other bankers would have refused.

Most of all, she said, she realized that one person can change the course of many lives.

"He lived big," Alexander said. "When you're trying to follow in those shoes, you can't waste a minute."

After the search and rescue crews located the crash site on Oct. 26, 2010, it was a K-9 team that ultimately found the remains of the men.

When Alexander got involved in search and rescue after purchasing Sockeye a year and a half ago, she ended up meeting the woman and the dog who located her father's remains.

Like that K-9 team did for her, Alexander said she hopes to one day provide that type of closure for other families.

Though she and Sockeye are not certified as a K-9 team yet, a few weeks ago, she assisted in the search and rescue mission for the 79-year-old man who wandered away while picking mushrooms near Randle. Sockeye did not participate; Alexander went with another K-9 team.

There are numerous search and rescue teams in Lewis County, and volunteers are needed to fill a variety of roles, Alexander said.
