IBM Australia unveils Cloud Computing solution

IBM Australia will pour millions of dollars into a new cloud computing offering for the enterprise and government sector, but analysts believe the development could be a double-edged sword for the company.

SmartCloud Enterprise+ (SCE+) is IBM's private cloud solution that will be hosted at its data centre in the north-west Sydney suburb of Baulkham Hills.

Call for long-term aviation policy

The Government must look beyond a third runway at Heathrow to achieve necessary airport capacity, engineering and transport experts have said.

The aviation debate had become too heavily politicised, said the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT).

They said the long-term choice was not whether to build a third runway at Heathrow but whether the west London airport could realistically be expanded beyond three runways. If not, plans for an alternative hub airport in south-east England must be developed quickly. The two organisations were responding to the Government's draft aviation policy framework.

The ICE and the CIHT also made mention of the Government-appointed Commission into aviation needs headed by former Financial Services Authority chief Sir Howard Davies.

The institutions called for a "twin track" approach to aviation capacity, which pushes ahead with solutions that will maintain the UK's position as a leading aviation hub in the longer term.

The approach should also focus on what can be delivered in the short term to help relieve the capacity restraints at Heathrow and keep the UK from slipping even further behind its European rivals. They said the approach should acknowledge the crucial role UK regional airports play through connecting flights to the national hub and ensure regional airports' ability to fulfil this role is not undermined by lack of access to landing slots at Heathrow.

Alex Lake, from ICE's aviation expert panel, said: "Looking to the longer term, to maintain its global economic competitiveness, the UK needs a hub with more than three runways and rapid access to central London. If we decide Heathrow can't or shouldn't be expanded to this size we will need to develop a new hub facility elsewhere in south east England. This will naturally take time, so the Davies Commission must press on with evaluating all available long-term options now."

CIHT chief executive Sue Percy said: "The creation of the (Davies) Commission is welcome, but its final report will not be published until after the 2015 General Election, potentially causing yet more delay and indecision and damaging the UK's credibility as a location for private investment in aviation infrastructure.

"The Commission's interim report in 2013 must indicate a clear direction of travel and come 2015, Government should make an unambiguous decision that has cross-party consensus and can be driven forward."

A Department for Transport spokesman said: "The strength with which the different options are put forward shows precisely why we were right to set up a proper independent review with the timescale to consider fully what is in the country's interest. Maintaining the UK's status as a leading aviation hub is vital to our economy and history suggests that, without an agreed evidence base and a high degree of political consensus, it will not be possible to deliver a lasting solution that is right for the UK."

American Airlines intends to hire 2,500 Pilots

The airline's parent AMR filed for bankruptcy protection in November, and has been locked in a contentious battle with its pilots union over its efforts to cut labor costs.

In a letter to employees Wednesday, CEO Tom Horton said American Airlines will hire new pilots to staff new international and domestic routes. Company spokesman Bruce Hicks said about 1,500 of the new hires would replace retiring pilots, or jobs that open up due to attrition. American has about 7,500 active pilots today.

"The new American will be doing even more international flying, providing greater opportunities for career advancement and increased income for our people," Horton said in the letter.

The airline unveiled plans Wednesday to add new flights from Dallas/Fort Worth to Seoul, South Korea and Lima, Peru; from Chicago to Dusseldorf, Germany; and from JFK airport in New York to Dublin, Ireland. It also said it would increase domestic service from its hubs in Chicago and Dallas.

Tom Hoban, spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, said the union is skeptical about Horton's statement.

"We once had over 13,000 pilots," he said. "It's been the incredible shrinking airline ... unless they ink it in the contract, it doesn't have a lot of credibility with the pilots."

American had previously announced it would hire about 1,500 flight attendants starting later this year to replace the 2,200 flight attendants who took a $40,000 buyout package.

AMR has been struggling with losses from high labor and fuel costs. The company said it filed for bankruptcy to remain competitive with key rivals like Delta Air Lines, United Continental and US Airways, all of which had have undergone bankruptcy restructuring.

AMR had said it needed to make deep cuts in staffing and reduce related labor costs to emerge from bankruptcy. The airline's ground workers and flight attendants have worked out deals with the company.

But members of the Allied Pilots Association in August rejected a deal, which included having more flights flown by partner airlines, longer work hours and a possible end to the union's pension plan.

Last month, the company's management won an approval in bankruptcy court to impose terms of that unpopular deal on pilots. But American says pilots began calling in sick and filing frivolous maintenance reports that caused flight cancellations and delays to soar, chasing away some of its key business customers.

Management and the union have since returned to the bargaining table. The pilots union reported to its members Tuesday that progress is being made on a new labor deal.

Large transport plane crash resulted in the loss of 4,700 pounds of inbound mail

Federal officials say that absentee ballots being sent to U.S. military serving in Afghanistan may have been burned in a plane crash.

A top official in the Federal Voting Assistance Program this week notified election officials across the nation that a transport plane crashed at Shindad Air Base on Oct. 19.

The crash resulted in the destruction of 4,700 pounds of mail inbound to troops serving in the area.

Federal officials in their email to state election offices said they did not know if any ballots were destroyed. They also said the lost mail was limited to one zip code.

But they recommended that election officials resend a new ballot to anyone who requested one since the first ballot may have been destroyed in the crash and fire.
