Recession is hurting the Poor, not Middle Class

Everybody talks about the middle class being hurt in the Obama economy, but it's really the working poor who are getting crushed.

The president boasts that he and four more years of his trickle-down government policies are going to save the middle class' bacon, eggs and jobs.

And at the Tuesday night cockfight on Long Island, our presumptive ex-commander in chief accused Mitt Romney of being hypocrite and a liar who wants to help the rich at the expense of the middle class.

The middle class has become an important political football this fall, but no one knows what the middle class actually is.

It's certainly true the middle class has been hurt by the Great Recession. But the biggest losers are the working poor.

When the economy goes south, they are the first to lose their jobs or see their paychecks shrink.

The president doesn't talk about helping them. But the working poor are people like my daughter, a schoolteacher in Southern California. And Victor, my barber. And Jenny, who does my nails. And the waiter at the local restaurant.

When the middle class feels the pinch, what's the first thing they do to make ends meet? They drop their hair colorists and gardeners, who often end up becoming part of the 23 million Americans looking for jobs.

President Obama wants to encourage high-skilled immigrants to stay in America. That's fine. But it's the low-skilled immigrants and the working poor who I'm worried about.

They're the ones who do America's hardest, dirtiest jobs, and it's their kids who are hoping to join the middle class of tomorrow.

When I was growing up in Los Angeles the low-paid workers of the day were the Japanese, many of whom were gardeners.

But the Japanese worked hard, educated their kids and became one of our most successful ethnic groups, even after the prejudice of World War II. That's the way it's always worked in this country — until Barack Obama came along.

Obama wants to take wealth from the rich and give it to the poor so everyone in America can live on an equal scale.

But Americans have never been economically equal and don't want to be. The president wants to create something that's never existed in the history of the world; the economies that tried are on "the ash heap of history."

Obama's been a total disaster. The economy is tanking, 23 million are out of work, 47 million are getting food stamps, and he has no clue what to do for the next four years.

And since he can't defend his own record, all Obama's been doing is attacking Mitt Romney for his wealth and success.

Mitt has nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, he needs to stop being so shy about his record of success. He needs to do a little bragging to the American people — especially to the poor and working classes.

Come on, all you undecideds, step up. It's time to vote for Mitt and put America's workers back to work.

Spiritual Guru Sant Shri Asaram Ji Bapu has refused to appear before the Justice d K Trivedi Inquiry Commission

Spiritual Guru Sant Shri Asaram Ji Bapu has refused to appear before the Justice d K Trivedi Inquiry Commission

Spiritual guru Asaram Bapu has refused to appear before the Justice d K Trivedi Inquiry Commission set up by the Gujarat government to inquire into the mysterious death of two teenagers  studying in a gurukul run by him .

In an application to the commission, Asaram Bapu has said that the Commission may either send a representative to his ashram in Sabarmati  to record his statement, or record his deposition through video conferencing.

The commission will decide on Asaram's request on Tuesday.

Earlier, the commission had issed several summons to Asaram Bapu and his son Narayan Sai to appeal for cross-examination, but the father-son duo had always evaded.

Asaram Bapu in his application sent through his lawyer B M Gupta has said that there had been two major acts of violence in 2008 and 2009 over this issue and it was "not desirable" for him to appear before the commission in person for deposition.

In his application, Asaram Bapu has  expressed fear that there was a possibility of violence by anti-social elements if he is cross-examined by the Commission.

Gujarat government had set up the Commission in July 2008 after two students Dipesh Vaghela and Abhishek Vaghela were found dead in myserious circumstances on the bed of Sabarmati Ashram. Both of them were staying in the ashram.

Sant Shri AsaRam Ji Bapu wants his deposition recorded thru video conferencing

Controversial religious Sant Shri AsaRam Ji Bapu has again pleaded his inability to appear in person for deposition before the Commission of Enquiry probing the mysterious death of two teenagers studying in a Gurukul run by him in 2008 and suggested his statement could be recorded through video conferencing.

In an application to Justice (Retired) D K Trivedi heading the Commission of Enquiry, Asaram has said that the Commission either appoint a representative to record his statement or chairman himself could come to his Ashram in Sabarmati or it should be recorded by video conferencing.

The Commission had many times issued summons to Asaram along with his son Narayan Sai, to appear before the panel for cross-examination. However, the father-son duo always sought more time for different reasons and delayed their appearance before the Commission till date.

Trivedi Commission, which is probing the death of cousins Dipesh Vaghela and Abhishek Vaghela, has scheduled the hearing on Asaram's application on October 23.
Asaram, in a detailed application sent through his advocate B M Gupta, cited two major incidents of violence where riots broke out between his followers and public in July, 2008 immediately after the death of two boys and in 2009 during a rally of his followers in Gandhinagar.

"...So it is not desirable for me to appear before the Commission in person for deposition, and the purpose of personal appearance can be achieved by other ways also," said Asaram in his application.

He has also expressed fear that there was a possibility of violence by anti-social elements if he is cross-examined by the Commission and offered to bear the cost of Commission's visit to his ashram or video-conferencing.

Gujarat government had set up the Commission in July 2008 amid public furor after the two cousins were found dead on the bed of Sabarmati river. Both of them were resident students of the Ashram.

Their parents have alleged that the two boys were killed due to practice of 'black magic' by Asaram and he was directly responsible for taking their life.

The Commission was asked to probe the facts and circumstances leading to the death of two boys and also to recommend suitable measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents.

Kingfisher crisis: Business model to be blamed for the mess

Licence suspension shocks Kingfisher staff

Kingfisher stops bookings till it resumes ops

As the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced the suspension of flying licence of Kingfisher Airlines on Saturday, aviation experts were heard telling each other "I told you so".

Once voted the best carrier in India, the business model of Kingfisher Airlines (KFA) was always a recipe for disaster. Those in the aviation business were amazed and amused to see its self-styled 'king of good times' owner, Vijay Mallya, splurging on the airline as if there was no tomorrow.

Though KFA sensed trouble for the first time only in the second half of 2011, its unique method of functioning was always criticised for being "unsustainable".

KFA was an airline for people with a taste for luxury. While its astronomical fares pushed it out of the bounds of the country's biggest consumer section - the middle class - the airline's in-flight service standards were set too high to maintain for a long time . Fliers were treated to expensive wine, quality food and best entertainment facilities even on domestic, short distance flights. The airline staff, till the time they got their salaries, were among the best paid in the country.

Too good to last

KFA's extravagant flying service was too good to last forever. On Saturday, the DGCA made it official - Kingfisher Airlines is on ventilator support with minimal chances of revival. The aviation regulator suspended the Scheduled Operator Permit (SOP) of KFA, following Mallya's failure to come up with a viable plan of financial and operational revival after the airline's pilots and engineers went on a strike on September 29. The DGCA said the airline had not addressed any of the issues raised in its October 5 showcause notice. "They were asked to submit their operational preparedness plan for resumption of flights. Instead, they sought more time to file a reply to the showcause notice and did not indicate any timeframe for submitting a detailed response. As a result, their request was rejected," a DGCA official said.

KFA reaction

KFA, however, put up a brave face after receiving the DGCA order. "We would like to clarify that this is not a cancellation but a temporary suspension which is valid only till such time that we submit a concrete and reliable revival plan to the satisfaction of DGCA… We have in any case always maintained that once the issues with the employees are resolved, we will first present our resumption plan to DGCA for review, before resuming operations," a statement by KFA read. Aviation experts are keeping their fingers crossed over the revival chances of the airline. Kapil Kaul, the CEO of Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, a South Asian aviation think-tank, said: "The licence cancellation is on expected lines. So the Kingfisher story is following a very logical conclusion. What we must now focus on is the effects of its closure with respect to what it means to lenders, debtors, its staff and suppliers... The revival of Kingfisher is only possible if the promoters pump in almost a couple of thousand crores immediately."

Salary woes

KFA's real trouble began when its engineers , who had not received their salaries since January, went on a strike from September 29 . They refused to certify the planes, demanding payment of at least four months' salary and that too before Diwali. They were later joined by the pilots, which led the company to declare a lockout on October 1. Mallya, an industrialist and a liquor baron known for his flashy lifestyle and lavish parties, is battling for a lifeline. KFA is saddled with a loss of Rs 8,000 crore and a debt burden of another Rs 7,524 crore, a large part of which it has not paid since January. It was declared a non-performing asset (NPA) by bankers earlier this year. Kingfisher's lenders, including the SBI, are concerned over the suspension of the airline's licence but are not yet considering recovery of their loans through sale of its assets. "We are concerned as we have no control on these developments. We were prepared for all these. The last thing we bankers want is a complete shut-down of the airline, as we want it to resume operations and repay our money," said S. Vishwanathan, MD (mid-corporates), SBI.

Ministerspeak

Civil aviation minister Ajit Singh said KFA will have to satisfy the DGCA about safe flight operations and also make sure that its employees are not disgruntled before it resumes its services. "Their planes are not being serviced, their engineers are on strike and they (the airline) are not even able to give their flight schedule," Singh said. Asked about the allotment of Kingfisher's slot, he said: "I presume they would be allotted to other carriers." The DGCA has disapproved the winter flight schedule - from October 28 to March 31 - of the crisis-ridden airline. The grounding of the airline has triggered speculation of a further rise in airfares. With Kingfisher out of the picture, competitors such as Jet and IndiGo would get a larger share of the market and, hence, a bigger say in terms of pricing power. "The airfares have been on a constant rise with 40-50 per cent hike compared to last year. With Kingfisher losing its licence, the airfare structure will now go up further," said Santosh Rathore, a travel agent.

Death of another Airlines What would Kingfisher staff do now

The staff of  the troubled Kingfisher Airlines received the news of the carrier’s licence being suspended with shock and dismay here on Saturday.

“It is sad and shocking. We now expect the management to sort out issues with the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation and get the suspension revoked,” a senior employee of the company, who did not wish to be identified, said.

Despite repeated attempts, top Kingfisher officials here remained unavailable for comments on the developments in the capital. The airlines on Friday extended its partial lock-out till Oct 23.

The senior staffer added that the talks with the Kingfisher management were on and expressed hope that “something positive” would emerge from the salary negotiations.

“We only wanted our salaries, not the closure of the airlines, which is our source of livelihood,” the staffer said.
