Japan's Economy also Slips Into Global Recession

Revised figures from Japan's Cabinet Office show the economy contracted at an annual rate of 3.5% from July to September. GDP for April to June, previously rated as a small expansion, was revised lower to an annual contraction of 0.1%.

Japan's gross domestic product has dropped for two straight quarters, pushing its economy into a recession, according to fresh government data released Monday.

Economies are commonly described as being in a technical recession after two straight quarterly contractions. But many countries -- Japan included -- rely on advisory panels to define the length and starting point of recessions.
Economists are increasingly pessimistic about Japan's economy, and many expect GDP to contract in the current quarter as well. The third-largest economy in the world, Japan has suffered from weak exports, a trade spat with China and continued fallout from last year's nuclear disaster and tsunami.
The country's debt-to-GDP ratio is the highest in the world. And much like in the United States, its leaders do not agree on the path most likely to restore growth.

The disappointing revisions come as Japan prepares for an election that could affect monetary and fiscal policy in the country.
Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda dissolved the lower house of parliament last month, calling for new elections set to take place next week.
Related: What to expect in 2013
Based on current forecasts in Japan, neither of the two main parties is likely to secure enough votes in the election to form a majority government. One possible outcome is a coalition government with LDP leader Shinzo Abe as prime minister.

Abe has held the post in the past, but stepped down citing health reasons in 2007 after only a year in office. If elected, Abe would likely push the Bank of Japan to relax monetary policy and adopt a higher target for inflation.

Rushabh Agarwal, Kunal Lad and Nitin Gangahar of BITS Pilani Campus Offered jobs by Google

Rushabh Agarwal, Kunal Lad and Nitin Gangahar of BITS Pilani Campus have been offered jobs with a dream salary package of US $ 2,25,000 (INR 1.22crore) by Google, this semester. This is among the highest package grabbed by Indian students this year and the humungous package offered has grabbed eye balls of students and Industry alike. They will be posted at Google's head office in Mountain View, California. The trio have been asked to report for work by October 2013.

Beating the bleak placement scenario this year, they were hired during campus placements held in October. The trio, along with three other students, was shortlisted to appear in the final selection round at Google's office in Bangalore.

Sharing the success mantra to Times Of India, Rushabh said, "The final rounds were purely technical and were designed to test one's complete knowledge on the subject," adding that knowledge on subject to all students remains more or less the same but what matters is its application. He expressed that they will donate a certain amount to promote scientific temperament in the society, especially among the underprivileged masses. Undoubtedly, all three were brilliant and had won several awards in technical fests which exposed them to global innovations in computer science.

Kunal is more focused on the graph theories whereas Rushabh's interest lies in research and projects. Both have few publications to their credit. "The BITS exposure was phenomenal. I got an opportunity to do my internship in Canada. Besides, my research fellowship from the Indian Academy of Science at IIT-Mumbai also helped me upgrade myself several notches," said Kunal. Nitin did the summer internship in Google News division in Bangalore during May – July 2011.

Rushabh and Kunal attribute a major portion of their success to BITS which provided them comprehensive and holistic education along with interaction with best brains which helped them evolve into complete individuals. The surprising element is that they all are from the same branch, Computer Science. Even more surprising is the fact that their duals are also the same. They are in their fifth year of dual degree (MSc Mathematics and B.E honours in Computer Science) and they will be getting their degrees by July 2013. While Rushabh is from Mumbai, Kunal is a Nagpur lad and Nitin hails from Renu Sagar in UP.

Let's have a look at some of the placements at BITS Goa campus. Aman Bhatia, Tushar Mandar and Rounak Jain have landed themselves packages of 55 lakhs PA offered by Epic Systems, USA. Placements have literally been galore for Computer Science /Information Systems students for everyone with a CGPA of above 6 is placed. Many Core Mechanical Companies have also visited Goa Campus this time. Placements for EEE and ENI are also fairly average. Only Chemical engineers are in a spot of bother as the placement scenario has been a bit gloomy.

The sky high salaries of the Pilani trio have set the imaginations of BITSians, not only in Pilani but also in Goa and Hyderabad, soaring. They have surely inspired a whole generation of BITSians who will seek to follow in the footsteps of these young achievers.

How to Reedem Mutual Funds

How to Redeem your Mutual Fund Units

The process of 'selling' your mutual fund units is called as 'Redemption. This presentation shows how to redeem your mutual fund units. Most AMCs offer the redemption option on your account statement itself.

Instructions
1
Consult your mutual fund investment statement, which should have a transaction
slip at the bottom of the page. Instructions for filling out the transaction
slip and a mailing address for the mutual fund company should be featured on
the back of the statement so that you can mail it in and redeem your mutual
fund shares.

2
If you don't wish to redeem your mutual fund shares by mail or have misplaced
your investment statement, visit the broker that you originally purchased the
mutual fund shares through. Whether it is a physical broker or an online
brokerage, you should be able to redeem your shares with very little
difficulty. If you have a money market account set up through your broker,
the funds from your redeemed mutual funds will likely be deposited directly
into that account for you to withdraw or reinvest.

3
Another alternative for redeeming your mutual fund shares is to wait for the mutual fund to reach its maturity date. Most brokers will have an option to let you automatically redeem a mutual fund that has reached its date of maturity, again depositing the money from the mutual fund directly into your money market account. Depending on the brokerage that you use, you may also have the option to use this money to invest in other mutual funds or stocks automatically from your money market.

Singer Jenni Rivera, seen here during the Sundance Film Festival in Park City,

Germany faces temporary economic slowdown

The German economy, Europe’s biggest, will not be able to escape the crisis and may even flirt briefly with recession early next year, but is well placed to rebound strongly, the Bundesbank said on Friday.

The German central bank, in its latest updated twice-yearly forecasts, said there were “indications that economic activity may actually fall in the final quarter of 2012 and the first quarter of 2013.” Recession is technically defined as two consecutive quarters of negative growth and many of Germany’s Eurozone neighbours have been pushed into recession, in some cases deep, by the region’s long-running debt crisis.

Although Germany has managed to hold up to the crisis fairly well, growth has slowed here as well since the beginning of the year.

After expanding by 0.5 percent in the first quarter of 2012, gross domestic product (GDP) grew by just 0.3 percent in the second quarter and a mere 0.2 percent in the third quarter.

“The cyclical outlook for the German economy has dimmed,” the Bundesbank wrote in its December monthly report.

“However, there are sound reasons to believe that Germany will soon return to a growth path. The sound underlying health of the German economy suggests that it will overcome the temporary lull without major damage to the labour market, in particular,” it said.

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert, quizzed about the Bundesbank forecasts at a regular news briefing in Berlin, said “it is no secret that we’re in a phase of economic cooling.

“But we have no doubt that the economy is still in growth mode,” he added.

“There are a whole range of indicators which in no way point to recession. The government remains cautiously optimistic.”

Taking this year and next year as a whole, GDP would expand by 0.7 percent in 2012 and then by just 0.4 percent in 2013, the Bundesbank predicted.

That represents a marked downward revision from the central bank’s previous forecasts in June, when it had been pencilling in growth of 1.0 percent for 2012 and 1.6 percent for 2013.
