Capt Robert “Vince” Herrick a Hobby Pilot killed in Blair in Ercoupe 415-C Air Plane Crash

Robert “Vince” Herrick had a love of flying that was second only to the love
for his late wife, family members said.
A pilot for 60 years, Herrick at age 92 still enjoyed flying his 1946
Ercoupe 415-C in the vicinity of his hometown of Nickerson, Neb.
“He flew for pleasure, and that's probably what he was doing yesterday,”
Steve Fauss, his son-in-law, said Friday.
“It wasn't uncommon for him to fly every day the weather was nice.”

Herrick, who had the use of only one eye, was about 25 miles east of his
hometown Thursday in his Ercoupe when it took a nose dive about 5:15 p.m. into a storage lot at the Woodhouse auto dealership in Blair.

The crash killed Herrick on impact, authorities said.

The Ercoupe is classified as a light sport aircraft.

According to Federal Aviation Administration regulations, a person with a valid pilot's license may continue to fly light aircraft as long as he or she maintains a valid motor vehicle driver's license, which was the case with Herrick.

There are no age limits on flying as long as a pilot's medical clearance is up to date, Tony Molinaro of the FAA said.

Pilots flying light aircraft are not required to receive annual or biennial medical examinations, though a pilot must fulfill any medical requirements of his driver's license. Pilots are not required to file flight plans for recreational planes.

Witnesses said the single-engine plane was flying unusually low and clipped power lines near the storage lot before the crash. The aircraft avoided the main part of the dealership, which was open for business.

No one else was injured.

The Washington County attorney has not yet released autopsy results.

The Ercoupe is stable and easy to fly, said Skip Carden, executive director of the Ercoupe Owners Club in Timberlake, N.C.

The twin-tailed aircraft, weighing 800 pounds when empty, is considered “incapable of spinning and really hard to stall,” Carden said.

The Ercoupe carries just 14 gallons of fuel and has a cruising speed of 108 mph. Its stalling speed is about 55 mph.

“Those planes were built for anyone to fly,” Carden said. “They don't have foot rudder controls, so that makes it a good plane for amputees to fly.”

Fauss said Herrick lost an eye many years ago in a shop accident, but he would still fly his plane regularly.

“That guy flew more single-engines than anyone I knew,” said Quentin Marquardt of Nickerson, who used to hangar next to Herrick at the Scribner State Airport. “He might keep them for two weeks and then trade them. He just loved to fly.”

Herrick stayed active as a member of the Nickerson Village Board and built a park for the town's children dedicated to the memory of his wife of 62 years, Birdie-Belle. He also owned a cattle insemination business in Nickerson until retiring at 65.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Moser Memorial Chapel, 2170 N. Somers Ave. in Fremont.

Herrick's survivors include daughters Roxie Fauss of Nickerson and Saralee Hocking of Beemer, Neb.; son Bob Herrick of Salisbury, Tenn.; and brothers Lynn of Brady, Neb., and Harlan, Ted and Norman, all of North Platte.

Cathay Pacific Airlines sees strong demand in India's Aviation Market

International carrier Cathay Pacific is growing fast in India and sees strong demand in the aviation market in the country despite world aviation being at its low point, a top airline official said here Saturday.
Tom Wright, Cathay Pacific country manager, South Asia, Middle East and Africa, said the airlines was ahead of its competitors in India. He was talking to reporters while announcing the launch of direct flight between Hyderabad and Hong Kong.
Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific became the first airline to connect the two cities. It will operate four flights a week.
The first flight from Hong Kong will be given the traditional water canon salute on arrival at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) here Dec 2.
The Airbus A330-300 aircraft will have both business and economy class configuration.
"The potential in this market is tremendous. The influx of IT and pharmaceutical companies into the city has made Hyderabad one of the fastest growing markets. We already see strong corporate and student traffic and believe there is real potential for leisure traffic," said Wright.
Hyderabad became sixth city in India to be served by Cathay Pacific and its sister airline Dragonair. Cathay Pacific operates to Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai while Dragonair has daily flight to Bangalore and the recently launched four-time weekly service to Kolkatta
With the launch of this flight, Cathay Pacific and Dragonair together operate 46 flights a week between India and Hong Kong
"This addition reinforces our commitment to the Indian market and I believe in its potential for long term growth," Wright added.
"From our perspective this has been a strong year. We added two destinations and increased frequencies to Chennai. We are growing fast. Even though the world economy is slowing down and India's GDP too falling down to 5.3 percent, we still see a strong demand."
Wright said the flight from Hyderabad not only connects the city to Hong Kong but also to mainland China, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and other destinations in North America, North Asia, Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

Describing Hong Kong as best gateway to the rest of the world, he pointed out that Cathay Pacific has a huge network of 170 destinations in 42 countries.
GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL) CEO, Vikram Jaisinghani said the launch of the flight was a momentous occasion and would meet the long felt need of travelers from Hyderabad.
The addition of Hong Kong will be the fourth destination in Far East Asia after Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
He promised best service to the Cathay Pacific, which started cargo operations on Hyderabad-Hong Kong route in May this year.
Sunil Puri, a representative of Hong Kong Tourism Board, said the flight would bring Hong Kong closer to Hyderabad. The travellers from the city earlier had to spend five hours flying to Delhi and other cities to catch a flight to Hong Kong.
Puri said as 'Asia's world city', a shopping hub for all sections of people and tourism centre, Hong Kong is an attractive destination for Indians.
"The fantastic thing is that Hong Kong is a visa free country. You don't require visa to go to Hong Kong. All your require is a passport," he said.

Yahoo’s New CEO Marissa Mayer Has A Fortune To Share

The Monday announcement of the new CEO joining for Yahoo had another announcement  to accompany. The new chief executive officer of the company, Marissa Mayer  announced the good news of her pregnancy with a boy child to be born on Oct 7 this year. Mayer reported to the Fortune reporter through an interview for a couple of hours.

She said that her son was quite mobile just as his parents, and more like his mother who recently switched from Google to Yahoo.

Mayer is 37 now, and had started her career as Google’s 20th employee. She had the responsibilities of maintaining the Google Maps and Google Earth technologies. Other than this, she was the leader in the Zagat project for the year 2011. She headed Google as vice-president for 13 years and was the first lady employee for Google.

Mayer’s first computer had been bought only at college. She started with being a paediatric neurosurgeon and then ended up with completing her academics with a huge mix of subjects like symbolic systems, philosophy and computer science.

She had 14 job offers after graduating. She hired an economist and worked hard by herself as well to find a solution. The motive was to get the best job selection in terms of success, lifestyle, location, career trajectory, etc.

Her thoughts convey that women employees in the tech industry are minute because of the traditional idealistic beliefs about a computer programmer is to be “a geek”. But, she suggests that women must find places where they could try unique projects and work with people who believe in them. This leads to a good pay off.

Pilots of Kingfisher Airlines Ltd would approach the Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to pay them their pending salary

Pilots of Kingfisher Airlines Ltd said on Thursday that they would approach the aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to intervene if management doesn’t pay them their pending salary for May by the end of this month. The grounded airline hasn’t paid the May salary to half its employees.
In a letter to chief executive officer Sanjay Aggarwal, pilots recalled that they had been promised that they would be paid their May salary before Diwali, which fell on 13 November.
“However, most of us are still waiting for the same in-spite of two weeks having past beyond the promised deadline,” said the letter,

“It may be appreciated that it is becoming extremely difficult to survive in this environment of uncertainty, which may further erode the confidence/trust in the management. This can be avoided by immediately crediting the May salary by 30th November 2012 failing which we will be left with no choice but to approach regulatory authority, media or take any other necessary required action,” the letter said.
According to a settlement reached earlier, employees were to be paid their April salaries by 31 October and May salary by 12 November. Salaries for the months of June-September were to be paid once the company is recapitalized. From October on, the company will pay salaries a month late, which means the October salary will be paid by the last week of December.

The engineers and Pilots of Dr Vijay Mallya-controlled Kingfisher Airlines, who had resorted to indefinite strike starting 1 October, resumed work on 25 October after reaching a settlement on salaries.

DGCA asked the airline on 5 October to demonstrate why its permit to fly should not be suspended or cancelled for failing to establish a “safe, efficient and reliable service” and gave it 15 days to submit a reply.

On 26 October,  Kingfisher Airlines needs more than $1 billion to fully fund a turnaround business plan.

The airline is looking at resuming operations by the third or fourth week of November, if the regulator revokes the suspension of its licence and allows it to fly.

3 Indian Institute of Management IIM-Indore students Expelled for Taking Drugs

Three students of the post graduate programme of management at Indian Institute of Management in Indore have been expelled after they were allegedly caught taking drugs.
On Wednesday, the hostel staff had spotted the second year MBA students consuming narcotics and informed the

faculty incharge of the hostel professor Siddharth Rastogi.

Rastogi immediately reached the hostel premises in the campus at Prabandha Shikhar Rau and caught them red handed. This is the second case in a year of such kind.

In February two students from Integrated Programme in Management and PGP were also found taking drugs. They were rusticated first but were later pardoned and allowed to complete their courses.

In the recent case a preliminary inquiry was conducted by the officers at the hostel on Wednesday after which a detailed investigation was done by the disciplinary committee at the institute.

“The committee found the student guilty of the offence and submitted the report to the director. The students then filed an appeal with the director asking for some relief and second chance but the director rejected their plea,” said IIM-I public relation officer Akthar Parvez.

Looking at the gravity of the issue the authorities concealed the identity of the students to protcet their future prospects.

Parents of the students were informed immediately about the incident.

They reached the institute, and requested the director to pardon the students but the institute decided to stand by its action probably with a hope that it might act as a deterrent in future.

When HT contacted IIM I Director Dr N Ravichandran he refused to comment on the issue and said, “When someone dies you don’t go to his house to ask how you feel. It is a sensitive issue. I am in Mumbai so contact me after a couple of days.”

Pilot dies in Texas plane crash : Cessna 421

Pilot dies in Texas plane crash, alone on board

WELLS, Texas (AP) - Officials say the pilot of a twin-engine plane died in a fiery East Texas crash during a flight from Houston to Oklahoma.

Department of Public Safety Trooper David Hendry said Tuesday the pilot, whose name wasn't immediately released, was alone on board.

The Federal Aviation Administration says searchers found the Cessna 421 wreckage Monday night in a field near Wells, about 140 miles northeast of Houston.

The plane was en route from West Houston Airport to Tulsa Riverside Airport when contact was lost around 9:30 p.m. Monday amid possible bad weather.

A National Transportation Safety Board spokesman says their investigators arrived Tuesday.
