Air India took delivery of its first Boeing 787 commercial widebody airplane

Air India took delivery of its first Boeing 787 commercial widebody airplane on Thursday at Boeing Co's final assembly plant after a months-long dispute between airline and manufacturer over compensation for a four-year production delay.

Three white 787s trimmed with red and orange Air India colors were parked at the Boeing plant near Charleston, South Carolina and ready for delivery at the end of May. Delivery was held up for months while Air India and Boeing worked out a compensation settlement and waited for Indian government officials to approve it. Terms were not disclosed.

The Dreamliner was also at the heart of a recent Air India pilots' strike. In July, about 500 Air India pilots ended the almost two-month strike over exclusive rights to fly the Dreamliner.
The striking pilots had demanded that their colleagues from the former Indian Airlines, the domestic state-run carrier that merged with Air India, not be trained to fly Dreamliners because they worried it could hurt their own career prospects.

Boeing said Air India is the fifth airline in the world to take delivery of a 787 Dreamliner. The ailing airline has ordered 27 Dreamliners in all.

"I am sure Air India and their customers will be thrilled to experience the revolutionary features on the 787, an airplane that will be the key focus of the airline's turnaround plan," said Dinesh Keskar, senior vice president of Asia Pacific and India Sales for Boeing Commercial Airplane, in a statement.

The airplane delivered today was built in Everett, Washington and flown to South Carolina for delivery.

"The 787 will allow Air India to open new routes in a dynamic marketplace and provide the best in-flight experience for our passengers," said Rohit Nandan, Air India Chairman and Managing Director.

Made primarily of lightweight carbon fiber materials, the new 787 is lighter than standard aluminum widebody jets. It is the first mid-size airplane capable of flying long-range routes, enabling airlines to open new, non-stop routes preferred by the traveling public, Boeing said in a statement.

Air India's Dreamliner is equipped with 18 business class seats and 238 economy class seats. The airplane is scheduled to fly to New Delhi on Friday.

India, one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world, offers tremendous growth opportunities to planemakers as more newly affluent Indians take to the skies. Boeing officials forecast passenger traffic to grow by 8.4 percent annually in South Asia, which includes India, and by 7 percent annually in China up to 2031.

Boeing Co raised its forecast for the Indian plane market earlier this month, saying the South Asian country would need 1,450 new aircraft worth $175 billion by 2031. "India will have the highest passenger traffic growth in the world, higher than even China's in the next 20 years," Keskar told reporters.

Sant Shri Asaram Ji Bapu booked for slapping cameraman

An FIR was today lodged in Ghaziabad against religious guru Asaram Bapu for allegedly manhandling a cameraman of a news channel. "Asaram Bapu was booked under Section 323 of IPC (voluntarily causing hurt) on the complaint of cameraperson Sachin Kumar," SHO of Kavi Nagar police station

Sudhir Kumar Tyagi said.
As per the FIR, Asaram allegedly slapped Kumar when he failed to follow the religious leader's instruction to capture in camera the congregation during a Samagam (meeting) in Ghaziabad on Sunday evening.

Kumar was taking Asaram's interview when the latter asked him to pan the camera at his followers attending the 'Samagan'. Kumar apparently did not hear Bapu's instruction and was allegedly slapped by him.

Kumar approached the Kavi Nagar police station where the FIR was registered.

Unqualified Pilot flew doomed Airplane

Crash after Takeoff a year ago wiped out hockey team, team officials and eight crew members

The pilot of a plane that crashed last year, wiping out a professional Russian ice hockey team - and taking the life of Canadian coach Brad McCrimmon - had been granted per-mission to fly it based on forged documents, federal investigators said on Thursday.

The pilot and co-pilot of the Yak-42 plane "had not undergone the necessary training to fly this type of air-craft," Vladimir Markin, spokesman for Russia's top investigative agency, said in televised comments.

He said the pilot's permission to fly the plane had been granted on the basis of "falsified documents."

The Yak-42 aircraft slammed into a river bank shortly after takeoff on Sept. 7, 2011, from Yaroslavl, home city of the Kontinental Hockey League team Lokomotiv, whose Russian and foreign stars were on board flying to an out-of-town game.

Thirty-six Lokomotiv players and officials plus eight crew members were killed; only one crew member survived.

Vadim Timofeyev, deputy head of airline Yak-Service which operated the flight, was held responsible for the "blatant violations" and has been charged with breaching air safety rules, Markin said. He could face seven years in prison.

Among the dead were Swedish goal-keeper Stefan Liv, a former world and Olympic champion, and Canadian Brad McCrimmon, who played more than 1,200 NHL games and was head coach of Lokomotiv at the time of the crash.

Russia and the former Soviet republics combined for one of the world's worst air-traffic safety records last year, with a total accident rate almost three times the world average, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Mutual Funds Big cheating Businss of few Bankers

Be Aware  Please its your hard earned money.

What to do when Mutual Funds distributors ask you to Invest Big ?

Retail investors have led a life of less confusion for some time. Bad market conditions, along with banning of entry load by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) in August 2009, ensured many distributers were neither motivated nor inclined to churn aggressively — asking existing investors to move to another scheme.

But, the new guidelines from Sebi could lead to just that – more churning through mis-selling. The churning in the Rs 7 lakh-crore mutual fund sector is 20 per cent annually, according to the market experts.

- Continue SIPs for long-term gains
- When it's too good to be true
- Sinha seeks to please all
- Sebi gives a little, but takes as well
- Mutual funds lose 8,600 equity folios a day

Now, with the market regulator allowing an extra 30 basis points expense ratio from all investors if a fund house manages to get 30 per cent of its fund collection from beyond the top 15 cities, experts say churning may increase, especially in smaller towns.
“Since the fund house and distributors stand to earn additional money, there could be a case for churning in smaller towns,” says Gaurav Mashruwala, a financial planner. Consequently, it is important to ask questions to distributors.

PITCH ONE
“RBI will cut rates soon, move your money from debt to equity fund”
Answer: What ensures that equities will do any better, in the short term? Also, if there are rate cuts, the value of debt instruments will increase so I will make capital gains.

Also, if you are moving from a debt fund in less than a year, the capital gains will be added to your income and taxed. If you earn say, 12 per cent annually or six per cent in six months and exit, there will be a 30 per cent tax (for someone in the highest income tax bracket) on the capital gains or 1.8 per cent. In addition, there will be an exit load of 1 per cent. So, you gain only 3.2 per cent.

With Sensex annualised returns of 3.33 per cent in the last three years, debt has easily outperformed at eight-nine per cent. Yes, if the market were to correct sharply, one can look at it as an opportunity because net asset values would go down sharply allowing you to buy more units for the same money. And, in the turnaround situation, one would stand to gain substantially.

PITCH TWO
“Shift to this equity fund. It has returned 10 per cent in the last six months”
Answer: Isn’t there a short-term capital gains tax of 15 per cent? I will gain 8.5 per cent. Also, there could be an exit load (on principle plus capital) of a per cent or more which many fund houses have imposed, if you shift from a scheme in less a year.

PITCH THREE
Dividend scheme will earn you regular money. Take it out of a growth scheme.
Answer: Why should I take dividend income? The NAV will also fall bringing down my returns? In addition, there will be no compounding of my dividend income? Sometimes, distributors ask you to move within the same scheme.

Amar Ranu, senior manager (third party products), Motilal Oswal Private Wealth says, “The distributor will ask the investor to switch to the dividend option of a scheme from the growth option, as the former is about to announce a dividend payout. The investor will get lured to the dividend option without realising that they are moving within the same scheme. Even though there is no actual loss, you are still being misled.”

PITCH FOUR
Your ELSS has completed three years. Now there are no benefits.
Answer: There is no loss either. There is no capital gains tax after one year. After the lock in period, if the fund is doing well, one should continue with their investments. “Some distributors could try and coax the investor to redeem their units from the tax saving scheme saying that since there is no tax benefit as such any more, it would be wiser to nvest in say an equity fund that is being suggested”, says Suresh Sadagopan, a certified financial planner.

PITCH FIVE (the oldest one)
If you move your money into this new fund offer, you will get units cheaper.
Answer: Whether I buy at the NAV of Rs 10 or Rs 100, the result is same. “Distributors would try to sell products to investors who did not need it. It could be exotic sounding and could promise higher returns than his existing scheme”, says Ranu.

Risky fund management more common in Catholic-dominated regions of U.S.

Fish on Fridays, mass on Sundays, and risky mutual fund management throughout the week. That’s what a new study from the University of Georgia and Southern Methodist University says about funds based in predominantly Catholic areas of the U.S.

“You would think generating profits would be the only decision factor in mutual fund management. We found that local culture, specifically religion, actually has a significant impact on the decisions that fund managers are making, especially when we’re talking about risk,” said University of Georgia economics professor Tao Shu.

The study uses data from the American Religion Data Archive to determine a Protestant to Catholic ratio at the county level across the U.S. Mr. Shu identifies actively managed mutual funds in these areas through the U.S. Mutual Fund database maintained by the Centre for Research in Security Prices, and selects funds marked by Thomson Reuters as “growth” or “aggressive growth.”

“We found that funds based in low-Protestant or high-Catholic populations take more speculative risks in significantly higher fund return volatilities,” said Mr. Shu.

After cutbacks, Tampa International Airport set to add 13 positions

TAMPA — Here's a sign of Tampa International Airport's improving bottom line: The airport plans to start hiring after years of cutting back its workforce.

The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority board voted on Thursday to approve a $183 million budget that will fund 13 new jobs.

A projected improvement in revenue from parking, concessions and airline fees helped the budget grow by 4 percent, or $6.3 million, from the current fiscal year. The airport plans to pay $49 million in salary and benefits, $3.5 million more than in the 2012 fiscal year budget, which ends Sept. 30.

It's not a lot of new jobs, but it's a positive sign for an airport that has shed 63 jobs since 2009. The airport currently has 573 paid positions.

Airport CEO Joe Lopano said it was time for Tampa International to start growing again.

"I kept the head count steady at 573 because I wanted to see where we were going, where we were competitive, where we had success before I did anything with the staff," Lopano said.

The staffing level has been at 573 positions since 2011 and this year the airport decided not to add any positions. But Lopano said it's time to add three positions in marketing and three in human resources, two positions each in construction, information technology and police dispatch, and one in procurement.

"This year is for us to grow," he said. "We're hiring these people to help us maintain and sustain for the future."

Lopano said the airport "wanted to see if the cuts were too deep and if we needed more help." The answer: an unequivocal yes.

"During the last year we started doing more marketing, we did a lot with analytics," Lopano said, "but we didn't add any head count. We still held at 573, and the way we did that was I robbed certain departments. So this year, where I took, I have to put back.

"We're backfilling areas where people are screaming 'Hey, we need help!' "

The airport cut too deeply into the number of radio dispatchers for the Tampa International Airport Police Department, Lopano said.

He also wants to add positions to human resources to implement a new "accountability" culture at the airport. The construction jobs will be needed to manage future capital improvements that are expected to be a part of the airport's new master plan set to be completed in January.

Some of the new jobs will help bring in revenue, Lopano said, like bolstering the marketing department and adding new information technology jobs that will be needed to maintain the new digital video screens that will allow the airport to sell more advertising.

"We've increased our revenue and held our costs in check," Lopano said. "Now we have an opportunity to see where can we grow further — and we'll have new people to help us."
