Bright Future for Aviation Industry Ahead

PAMPANGA Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. Chairman Emeritus Levy P. Laus foresees a brighter future for the International Aviation Industry in the Clark Civil Aviation Complex. Laus anticipated a big demand for Pilots and other Aviation-related Jobs in the coming years.

A licensed Helicopter Pilot himself, Laus said more jobs will be made available for pilots. This, as the Clark International Airport and its stakeholders blaze the trail for the growth of the aviation industry in Central Luzon anchored on the development of the Clark Civil Aviation Complex. There are numerous flying schools now operating in Clark such as the Omni Aviation and now the CebPac’s flying school where state-of-the-art simulators for commercial aircraft are available to train future pilots.

The Filipinos have an edge in the aviation industry because of our grasp of the English language which is required in aviation training. Other nationalities like Russians and even Indians have difficulty speaking English.

I remember the mid-air collision sometime in November 1996 when I was working as sub-editor of Saudi Gazette in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. At least 350 people were killed when a Boeing 747 Saudia Airlines Flight 763 collided with a cargo plane, an Ilyushin IL-76 of the Kazakhstan Airlines, above New Delhi in India. The alleged problem: The Russian pilots have minimal training in English.

The New Delhi control tower at the Indira Gandhi International Airport gave different heights for the two aircraft but the Indian airport was apparently having language difficulties among Russian Pilots. Even the Indians have had difficulties speaking comprehensible English, thus one of the worst aviation disaster happened above the Airspace of India.

Saudia Airlines Flight 763 bound for Jeddah and the Ilyushin cargo plane bound for New Delhi collided in mid-air and went down in fireballs.

Passengers were strewn like rag dolls above the Indian air space onto wooded farmland 60 miles west of India’s capital. I refused to fly via a Saudia Airlines flight since that mid-air collision and instead flew Singapore Airlines every year when I go for vacation.

Speaking to reporters during a meeting at Gracelane, Laus also sees a rosy picture for the economy. “2013 is a promising year for the Philippine economy,” according to Laus. He said that the country is among the Top 10 of growing economies in Asia which is largely anchored on the so-called “mobile economy.” The continuing demand for OFWs and the remittance continues to accelerate.

Laus said we should strive to “enhance the attractiveness of the country as an investment haven.”

Flyers stuck in Planes as Kingfisher staff go on Flash Strike

Kingfisher Airlines has paid the salary for March to a handful of employees, with no salaries sanctioned after that month.

: In an unprecedented occurrence, passengers flying or booked on Kingfisher flights were stuck in aircraft and airports across the country on Sunday evening when the airline's engineers, unpaid for months, went on a flash strike.
Passengers landing even in big metros like Delhi or Mumbai suffered the same fate as the airline engineers did not put chocks on aircraft tyres as a result of which aerobridges could not be attached and passengers were stuck inside the aircraft. Similar things happened at other airports with step ladders not being attached to the airline's planes to allow deboarding, also leaving harrowed Kingfisher passengers waiting to board their flights stuck at airports.

Kingfisher has paid the salary for March to a handful of employees, with no salaries sanctioned after that month.

In what can compound the airline's woes, its pilots are also learnt to be planning to stop flying from next Friday. But Sunday's sudden strike left flyers aghast with no option but to be stranded in their respective locations.

The anger in the Kingfisher ranks is peaking as employees fear that aviation authorities are not heeding their constant refrain that it is unsafe for an airline to keep making its people work without pay.

"It is very surprising the way aviation authorities are turning a blind eye to the situation. Will they act only after some mishap takes place? One DGCA chief has already lost his job for trying to act against Kingfisher and now no aviation authority dares to do anything," said an angry pilot, requesting anonymity.

The aviation ministry's stance has been that it cannot shut down an airline simply because it has not paid its employees for months and claims that the DGCA will ensure safety on whatever number of aircraft Kingfisher chooses to fly.

It says by that logic, it would first have to shut down Air India. "If employees are unpaid for months, they have the option of refusing to work or quitting and take legal recourse against the airline management. But if you are coming to work then you cannot suddenly go on strike and keep passengers locked inside aircraft. Instructions have been issued to Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore airports to be prepared to handle such situations from Monday," said a senior official.

Senior aviation ministry officials say they are not acting against the airline as its management possibly wants them to shut it down.

German Bank DVB Bank SE sues DGCA, Kingfisher Airlines

Germany's DVB Bank SE has sued aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Kingfisher Airlines Ltd to have two planes it financed for the troubled carrier deregistered, a possible first step towards recouping its funds.

The case underlines the problems that Kingfisher applies for renewal of its licence leasing firms and financing companies face in recovering grounded planes from Kingfisher, as Airports, banks and tax authorities scramble for the crisis-hit carrier's assets.

International Lease Finance Corp (ILFC) - owned by US insurer AIG - is also struggling to take back Kingfisher planes it owns, one of which, an Airbus A-320, has been impounded by tax authorities for non-payment of dues by the carrier.

The DGCA must deregister the DVB-financed Airbus planes, now parked in Istanbul, before the bank can put them to use or lease them out.

"Our main trouble really is with the DGCA, which should deregister the aircraft," Carsten Gerlach, senior vice president of aviation finance at DVB, told Reuters.

"We have now filed a writ petition at the high court in Delhi against DGCA and also Kingfisher, strictly focused on deregistration," Gerlach said by phone from Frankfurt.

However, the DGCA argues that those aircraft were not financed by DVB alone, so deregistering them would make the DGCA answerable to other financiers, who are also trying to recover their money, according to a senior government source with direct knowledge of the situation.

The DGCA and Kingfisher did not respond to requests for comment.

Meanwhile, leasing company IFCL has also asked the DGCA to deregister four Kingfisher-operated planes, but it faces separate obstacles.

These planes include an Airbus A-320 parked at Mumbai airport that was impounded by tax authorities last week after the carrier failed to settle long-pending dues.

"People just go the Airport, see a plane in Kingfisher colours, and stake their claim on it," the source said, referring to the tax authorities' impounding of the Airbus.

"What they don't understand is that the plane may not belong to Kingfisher at all."

Kingfisher, owned by flamboyant liquor baron Dr Vijay Mallya, has hit back at the tax authorities' actions, saying it is illegal for authorities to seize aircraft that are owned by foreign lessors.

"This will send a very wrong signal to any foreigner who wishes to do business in the aviation industry in India," the airline said in a statement last week.

Kingfisher has 33 scheduled passenger planes registered in India, according to data from the DGCA. It had a fleet of 64 a year back, when it was India's No. 2 carrier by market share.

It is saddled with a combined debt load of $2.5 billion, according to one estimate, and has not paid salaries for months.

Kingfisher, which has not flown since October, had its license suspended in October after months of canceled flights and staff walkouts.

A small plane Citation Jet crashed at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City,

A small plane crashed Friday morning at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City, but no one on board was seriously hurt.

Just after 10 a.m., the Citation jet was coming in for a landing on the east side of the airport when it experienced a problem. The jet crashed just short of the runway, and slid into the grass.

There was a small fire on board the plane just after the crash. Crews at the airport quickly put out the flames. There were two people on board. One was transported to a hospital in good condition. The other person refused treatment.

It's not known yet what caused the problem that led to the crash.

Officials say the plane has been removed from the airfield, and the east runway reopened at about 3:30 p.m. There was no impact to commercial airline operations during this time.

Amazon Web Services to accommodate big data storage Amazon's new High Storage EC2 package is customized for Jobs with large volumes of data and high Through put

Eyeing the growing market for big data analysis, AWS (Amazon Web Services) has introduced a storage package, called High Storage, that can offer fast access to large amounts of data.

High Storage, an Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) package, is designed to run data intensive analysis jobs, such as seismic analysis, log processing and data warehousing, according to the company. It is built on a parallel file system architecture that allows data to be moved on and off multiple disks at once, speeding throughput times.

[ Stay on top of the current state of the cloud with InfoWorld's special report, "Cloud computing in 2012." Download it today! | Also check out our "Private Cloud Deep Dive," our "Cloud Security Deep Dive," our "Cloud Storage Deep Dive," and our "Cloud Services Deep Dive." ]

"Instances of this family provide proportionally higher storage density per instance, and are ideally suited for applications that benefit from high sequential I/O performance across very large data sets," AWS states in the online marketing literature for this service. The company is pitching the service as a complement to its Elastic MapReduce service, which provides a platform for Hadoop big data analysis. AWS itself is using the High Storage instances to power its Redshift data warehouse service.

An AWS instance is a bundle of compute units, memory, storage and other services configured to the characteristics of a particular type of workload. High Storage is the ninth type of compute instance that AWS has introduced. It joins other instant types customized for particular workloads, such as instances optimized for using GPUs (graphics processing units) or for HPC (high performance computing) jobs.

The High Storage instance offers 35 EC2 compute units of compute capacity and 117GB of working memory. Up to 48TB of storage is spread across 24 direct attached storage hard disk drives. Spreading data across multiple disks can speed data transfers because the read-and-write speed of a single disk is no longer a bottleneck. The system can offer more than 2.4GB per second of sequential I/O performance.

Customers can evoke High Storage instances from the AWS Management Console, from the EC2 or Elastic MapReduce command lines, or from the AWS SDK or third-party libraries. The High Storage instance is currently available on the U.S. east coast and will be available in other parts of the world in the next few months. High Storage instances can be purchased ether on-demand or be reserved ahead of time at reduced cost.

Capt Gardner Russom, of Calhoun was killed when his Cessna Single Engine Air Plane crashed near Tom B. David Airport in Calhoun.

Man killed in plane crash identified

An aerial photo shows the location of Tuesday's plane crash in Gordon County that claimed the life of a Calhoun man. The plane crashed to the right of the runway shortly after takeoff.

Authorities say Roy Gardner Russom, 76, of Calhoun was killed around 2 p.m. Tuesday when his single engine plane crashed shortly after taking off from Tom B. David Airport in Calhoun.

Russom died as the result of blunt force trauma related to the crash, according to deputy coroner Bo Nicholson.

Nicholson said the Calhoun Police Department, the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating how the plane crashed.

Russom was the only occupant of the plane, Nicholson said.

Police and federal officials say Russom's single-engine plane crashed and burst into flames west of the airport.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the amateur-built aircraft crashed in the woods.

Bergen says the plane burst into flames and was destroyed.
