Reasons Why Cloud Computing Remains Unpopular Past 2012

There is no limit to what cloud computing can offer to individuals, corporations, academic institutions, and non-profit organizations. Cloud computing benefits cut across storage, working, communication, and so many other industries and functions. As yet, few people actually use it; or rather very few individuals are making the transition to it from the ‘inefficient, traditional and expensive’ forms or techniques.

These negative attitudes have been promoted by a number of reasons. Some are mere excuses where logic is called upon. Others are real concerns and thus form the basis of this article. People don’t use cloud computing for different reasons; and the most contentious ones include the following. According to most cloud computing industry experts, these could be the reasons why most people avoid cloud computing.

On top of the list is the cost of cloud cost computing. Premium and efficient cloud computing services remain costly for the regular business person and thus make uptake very slow or non-existent. Setting up, subscriptions, and service maintenance costs are high—so is the cost of doing business. Rather than setting up new systems at an extra expense, most businesses prefer operating on slow and inefficient systems which are (now) cheaper at maintenance level. Businesses don’t want an extra expense to devalue their present working servers, among a horde of other reasons. Of course, there is a valid opportunity cost explanation to justify why cloud computing is the cost efficient option in the long run. However, most businesses, small businesses especially, find this pretty hard to concur. As such, because of the cost debates, the adoption of cloud computing remains slow.

The second reason why cloud computing remains unpopular is because of security concerns. Security in the cloud continues to be a hot debate topic at most cloud computing conferences. There are hackers, thieves, and other malicious individuals who would benefit a lot from stolen data off cloud computing servers. Whereas most cloud computing providers offer some of the best security protocols that are difficult to bypass, people and businesses still have security concerns. These are measured on the basis of traditional businesses which have all their digital data stored within their premises; therefore, charging securing roles to a third, large party, is difficult.

Lastly, privacy is another big problem cloud computing faces, bringing a lot of negative publicity (hence, additional costs) to cloud computing industry. In a recent outburst, Steve Wozniak—Apple’s co-founder—stated that cloud computing would not be in the cosmos in the next five years, that it would become practically impossible to keep digital secrets because one firm will be having them!

These sentiments have been echoed elsewhere. Digital ownership will become a thing of the past. Of course where ownership is concerned, that’s enough for any self-caring person to avoid the technology. Overall, although some of these details are sensitive and scary, cloud computing remains a candidate as the technology to beat in the future.

Blue-sky-thinking for a Greener, Sky full future

Air traffic management, including bird-formation flight patterns, is top of a list of ideas on how aviation can go beyond aircraft design to evolve on the ground and in the sky to meet the expected growth of air travel in a sustainable way.

In July Airbus released its vision of what a passenger jet will look like in 2050 - a graceful, spaceship-like vessel brandishing long, slim wings, semi-embedded engines and a U-shaped tail - but the planemaker says that around 9 million tonnes of fuel and 28 million tonnes of CO2 emissions could be saved every year in Europe and the US by optimising aircraft systems, shaving 13 minutes off journeys and saving passengers over 5 million hours of flight time a year.

"We can do things to make the aircraft more efficient... more eco-efficient, but in order to meet the targets that we've set ourselves in the long-term we have to have a more holistic approach," says Andy Gordon, Airbus's director of strategic marketing and analysis.

Air traffic control technology, however, is some way behind airplane technology, with multiple organisations around the planet managing the Air Traffic Management ATM.L systems. Two programmes, NEXTGEN in the U.S. and SESAR in Europe, are currently in operation to evolve the ATM system. Deployment is scheduled for 2014.

Though the aviation industry as a whole has reduced fuel burn and emissions by 70 percent in the last 30 years, the total number of passenger aircraft is predicted to double from a current crop of around 15,550 to 32,550 by 2031 according to the latest forecast by Airbus, the world's largest manufacturer of such jets.

With a sky chock-full of planes, the aviation industry has set a target for carbon neutral growth by 2020; in 2050, emissions should be halved compared to 2005 levels.

FLIGHTS OF FANCY

The latest instalment of "The Future by Airbus", a mammoth sustainable aviation exercise, is tagged "Smarter Skies" and focuses on forward-thinking concepts which, if implemented, would reduce excess waste in time, fuel and emissions.

One is the sci-fi suggestion of "free flight", where intelligent aircraft rather than air-traffic controllers select the most efficient and eco-friendly routes. High-frequency routes would benefit from bird-like formations of aircraft that seek to alleviate drag reduction.

Tests with Airbus's A400M military aircraft have, according to Andy Gordon, shown that there are significant benefits to bird-formation flight patterns, where craft can fly as much as one kilometre apart.

Another concept is already in a test phase: The TaxiBot is an electric tug that tows an aircraft from gate to runway, allowing engines to be switched off sooner for fuel and emissions savings.

Environmental groups, though happy for the industry to be focusing on sustainability issues, say technical tweaks are by no means enough.

Keith Allott, head of climate change for WWF UK points out that projections on the rapid growth of emissions, and wider climate impacts, already have these kind of improvements factored in.

"Technical improvements to aircraft efficiency are welcome, but they are no way enough to get global emissions levelling out let alone decline."

"We must also be realistic about the rate of penetration of new technologies," Allott adds. "There is a long life span of existing stock in the world's aviation fleet."

PLANES DON'T POLLUTE, PEOPLE DO

The only real way to reduce emissions, thinks Allott, is for people to decide against buying into a model of unrestrained growth, and make a choice whether they need to fly quite so much.

In July, Airbus released the results of a 10,000-strong survey, the second in two years, to quantify public perception of air travel's future. It found that over 60 percent of people worldwide want to fly more by 2050, though almost all - 96 percent - believe aircraft need to be more environmentally efficient.

Another emission-reduction option is biofuel. One of Airbus' concepts is a renewably powered acceleration technique which could allow steeper climb from much shorter runways than are in use today, and the use of sustainable biofuels and alternative energy sources like hydrogen or solar power.

Allott does see some strong theoretical proposals for biofuel to play a role, but warns that there will never be enough to go around in a world where everyone wants to fly all the time.

GODHRA (Gujarat): Religious guru Asaram Bapu and four others had a miraculous escape when their helicopter crashed just ahead of landing at a local college here today, police said.

They sustained minor injuries in the incident, police said.

"The chartered helicopter Asaram Bapu and his followers were travelling in developed a technical snag prior to landing at Godhra Science college and fell from a considerable height," police officials said.

It fell on the ground after losing balance and the impact was so powerful that it lay tilted on the ground, they said.

Bapu and the pilot had to be taken out after breaking the glass. They were rushed for treatment to a nearby Ashram hospital, officials said.

Australia: No Indians or Asians job ad triggers outrage

Melbourne: A contractor of Australia's supermarket chain Coles has come under fire for publishing a job advertisement, which barred Indians or Asians from applying. "Store requires no Indians or Asians please. Must speak English (sic)", read the online ad posted on Sunday.
The ad on the Gumtree website sought cleaners for a supermarket at Eastlands Shopping Centre in Hobart, according to local media reports.
It triggered outraged on social media sites, with people calling for a boycott of the store. Local newspaper The Mercury reported that the ad was later removed from the site.

A Coles spokesman on Monday admitted the ad had been posted by a contract company responsible for cleaning its Rosny store. "The ad was placed without Coles' knowledge and we were extremely concerned to learn of the ad and its contents," spokesman Jim Cooper said.
Tasmania's Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Robin Banks was quoted as saying that she wanted to track down the cleaning contractor to pursue possible legal action. "It's unlawful to blanket preclude a person because of their race," she said.
Banks said she often received complaints about job ads that discriminated against particular races. She said both the company offering the position and the publisher of the advert could be subject to legal action.
"Gumtree is probably in breach (of the law) as well because the Act says you can't publish, display, etc - material that is discriminatory," Banks said, adding "I've had other ads in print form and other sites brought to my attention, which I've followed up with the publisher.

With Air India’s first Boeing 787 Dreamliner landing here on Wednesday, a delivery schedule for the aircraft would be firmed up soon as two more are ready for delivery, official sources said.The last hurdle in taking delivery of this plane has been cleared with the law and justice ministry giving nod to the compensation settlement agreement which Air India would sign with the US plane-maker for the four-year delay in its deliveries.

An Air India team has reached Boeing's South Carolina facility to go through the formalities as soon as they get a nod from the airline's brass.A definitive delivery schedule would follow soon and it could involve the first few of these long-haul planes being delivered in 7-10 day intervals, the sources suggested.

With the first aircraft coming in now, Air India plans to take delivery of all 27 of them by 2016. The Dreamliners' delivery was to take place in 2008 and the rest by October 2011. But their delivery was delayed due to various factors, including spare supply delays and labour trouble.

The induction of the plane would enable Air India mount several new international flights, including those it plans to launch for Melbourne and Sydney this winter. The twin-aisle aircraft can typically carry between 210 and 250 passengers on routes of 14,200 km to 15,200 km distance, while using 20 per cent less fuel than airplanes of similar size. This is because of its lighter weight as it is made out of carbon composite material, instead of aluminium.

However, the aircraft would be flown on busy domestic routes for about two months for the already-trained pilots to practice more on take-offs and landings, before it is put into service on long-haul international routes, the sources said.

Air India was the second airline to place orders for 27 B-787s but two Japanese carriers, All Nippon Airways, Japan Airlines, and Ethiopian Airlines have already started flying them.

Boeing's Dreamliner programme recently suffered a setback with loss-making Australian carrier Qantas cancelling orders for 35 of them. The US aircraft manufacturer has invested an estimated $14 billion or more to develop the wide-body jet.

Last minute hitch in Air India taking delivery of the aircraft was also caused by an incident in which debris fell off a Dreamliner's engine during a pre-flight test at the Charleston Airport in South Carolina. This particular plane was made for Air India.

The US National Transport Safety Board probed the incident, following which India's Director General of Civil Aviation sought a report from its American counterpart — Federal Aviation Authority — on it. The safety clearance has now been given by both US and Indian authorities.

AUSTRALIA-EUROPE CARBON LINK WRONG: ABBOTT

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says the government is "wrong-headed" to link its emissions trading scheme to Europe's carbon market.


Climate Change Minister Greg Combet on Tuesday announced the Australian scheme would link with the world's largest carbon market in Europe from 2015 and the government would not go ahead with a floor price for carbon emissions.

Asked what signal it would send to the rest of the world about Australia's commitment to tackling climate change, Mr Abbott told reporters in Townsville: "Europe is not the rest of the world . our competitors, our trading partners, are not introducing a carbon tax".

"And this idea we somehow secure our economic future by tying up with Europe, when Europe is going backwards and Asia is going forwards, just shows how wrong-headed this government is," he said.

Mr Abbott said Prime Minister Julia Gillard had given up on bringing the budget back to surplus, as the carbon tax would now deliver less revenue than expected and the government was rolling out big spending programs on education, immigration and dental health.

"This is a government which knows it is not going to deliver the promised surplus and will do almost anything to avoid the humiliation of having to admit that it can't be trusted with public money," Mr Abbott said.
