🗺️ How to Create Google Maps Citations: A Step-by-Step Guide
Google Maps citations are essential for improving your business’s local SEO visibility. They help verify your business location, build trust with search engines, and enhance your online presence.
In this guide, you'll learn how to create citations using Google My Maps, coordinate tools, and Excel — including how to visually represent your business and define directions.
✅ Step 1: Prepare a Business Info Notepad
Before anything else, create a simple .txt Notepad file containing your business's core details. This will save time during the citation process.
Include the following:
Business Name
Phone Number
Email Address
Full Physical Address
Business Category
Website (if available)
Keywords (related to your services)
Short Business Description
You’ll use this information across multiple steps, so keep the file handy.
✅ Step 2: Open Google My Maps
Visit Google My Maps.
Click on “Create a new map.”
This opens a blank map interface where you can begin customizing.
✅ Step 3: Add Your Business Location
Use the search bar to enter the full address of your business.
Click on the marker to name it (use your business name) and add a description (copy-paste from your Notepad file).
✅ Step 4: Generate a Circle of Coordinates
Go to this Circle Generator tool
Enter the latitude and longitude of your business location from the map.
Define the radius (e.g., 5 km or 10 km).
Uncheck Include Center and keep it in multigeometry.
✅ Step 5: Extract Coordinates from the KML File
Copy the list of coordinates (latitude and longitude pairs) from the KML file generated.
Paste them into a blank Excel spreadsheet or Google Sheet.
✅ Step 6: Format the Coordinates in Excel
Use Text to Columns in Excel to split the coordinate data and paste the data in transposed form.
Clean any extra data and ensure proper alignment.
✅ Step 6: Prepare a Keyword-Rich Excel File
Now create a new Excel sheet for importing to Google Maps. Use your Notepad file for reference.
Columns to include:
Business Keyword or Name
Business Description
Latitude
Longitude
Copy and paste your keywords and descriptions.
Match each entry with the coordinates from Step 5.
Save this file as .xlsx.
✅ Step 7: Import Excel Data into Google My Maps
In Google My Maps, create a new layer.
Click “Import.”
Upload your Excel sheet.
When prompted, set the Name, Description, Latitude, and Longitude columns and choose to label each point by name or keyword.
✅ Step 8: Style Your Map
Use custom colors, icons, and labels for visual clarity.
Group markers based on name.
This makes the map not just informative but also visually appealing.
✅ Step 9: Add Directions Using KML
To showcase routes (like from a train station or main road to your business):
Now paste the same KML file for the same radius with predefined directions.
Once the KML file is uploaded, a circle will be generated around the business. Now, add markers along this circle.
Then click Add Directions on the top.
The route will appear, connecting important landmarks to your business.
🏁 Final Output: A Complete Google Map Citation Setup
By completing these steps, you’ll have
A customized map showing your business location
A cluster of geo-relevant citations
A route or path connecting key landmarks
A strong local SEO signal visible to both search engines and customers.
