Amazon Launches Cloud Computing Certification Program

Recognizing the importance of cloud computing on its business, Amazon Web Services (a subsidiary of Amazon.com) announced on April 30 the launch of a new AWS Certification Program.  With the accelerating use of cloud computing worldwide, Amazon is looking to provide to organizations with candidates and consultants with demonstrated knowledge of AWS best practices.

On Tuesday, the company announced that “the new AWS Certification Program helps to fill [a] need to recognize IT professionals that possess the skills and technical knowledge necessary for building and maintaining applications and services on the AWS Cloud”.

To earn an AWS Certification, individuals must demonstrate their proficiency by passing an exam.  Candidates are expected to attend courses through AWS Training to help gain proficiency with AWS services.  It’s unclear what the associated costs will be to obtain the certification.  The exams will be administered through testing centers in more than 100 countries and 750 testing locations.

Later this year, Amazon plans to roll out similar certifications such as the Systems Operations (SysOps) Administrators and Developers.

“We have many mission critical programs running on the AWS Cloud across our various business groups at Samsung, so training with AWS has been a priority for the whole company for some time,” said Seok Kyun Choi, Head of Training Division at Samsung SDS, which provides IT infrastructure services for big corporate clients.

One major concern for businesses is security and data integrity of cloud-related hardware and communications protocol.  Vulnerabilities exist.  Worse, some IT departments may be unaware if and when company data or proprietary communication has been compromised.

Kingfisher Airlines Ltd must clear debts before it is allowed to Fly again

It is unlikely that Kingfisher Airlines will be able to restart operations any time soon. This is because the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Government’s Service Tax Department and a consortium of banks are insisting that their dues be cleared before the airline is given permission to take to the skies again.

Kingfisher owes Rs 400 crore to AAI and over Rs 7,500 crore to a consortium of 17 banks.

Airline’s Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Agarwal had met the Directorate- General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) here last week and submitted a fresh proposal for restarting the airline. According to the proposal, UB Group would pump in Rs 650 crore in the airline over 10 months to facilitate restart of its operations.

“There have been no negotiations between AAI and the airline. AAI has categorically indicated that it is not willing to put the airline on a cash and carry basis. With AAI not only operating airports around the country but also managing Air Traffic Management and Communication Navigation Surveillance, the possibility of Kingfisher restarting operations seem remote,” a person connected with the development told Business Line.

Air traffic management relates to the process, procedures and resources which airports follow to make sure that aircraft are safely guided in the skies and on the ground. The cash and carry system allows an airline to operate its flights after paying an airport in advance before a flight leaves the airport. Normally airlines, which have not defaulted on payment of dues, are allowed to operate flights and various airport charges are billed to them at the end of a specified period of time.

However, with Kingfisher AAI is not keen to follow this route as it has already burnt its fingers dealing with the airline. Kingfisher had given AAI advance cheques which bounced.

There is also a feeling that the airline has “huge liabilities” and will not be able to conduct its operations smoothly with the funds being promised by the UB Group to restart its operations.

The airline, which reported a net loss of Rs 755 crore in the third quarter ended December 31, 2012, ceased operations on October 1 last year.

Plane crash kills former StratCom official, wife

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Media outlets in Virginia are reporting that a plane crash near Williamsburg on Friday has killed an Air Force major general formerly assigned to U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base, along with his wife and their dog.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says Maj. Gen. Joseph D. Brown IV and his wife, Susan, died when a single-engine Cessna 210 crashed in a James City County subdivision. The major general, 54, was the pilot. There were no other passengers on the plane.

Geller said the crash occurred at 4:53 p.m. Friday near the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport, where the plane was supposed to land. She said no one on the ground was injured, and no buildings were damaged.

Federal Aviation Administration investigators arrived at the scene Friday evening.

Other details, including the victims' hometown, weren't immediately released.

At the time of his death, Gen. Brown served as commandant of the the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy at the National Defense University in Washington. He spent about two years at StratCom in Nebraska before being assigned to the university in October 2010.

Govt to ship Kingfisher planes to international leasing companies to prevent boycott of Indian Airlines

In a damage-control exercise to prevent India's image from being dented in the global market, the civil aviation ministry may issue a guidance to release all Kingfisher Airlines Aircraft parked at Indian airports to international leasing companies.

The move comes in the wake of growing disquiet among major leasing companies over India's refusal to hand over the aircraft and fears that much-needed aircraft finance would be stopped to Indian airline companies.

The head of Aircraft finance giant International Lease Finance Corp (AIG.N) urged India on Wednesday to release six passenger jets held "hostage" by a bureaucratic dispute after struggling Kingfisher Airlines  (KING.NS)  failed to pay for them.

ILFC had warned in January that a failure to return leased airplanes to their true owners when airlines cannot pay their bills could put the country's aviation growth at risk by scaring off funding.

According to Los Angeles-based ILFC, the Delhi High Court ruled last month that ILFC could have access to its aircraft to ensure they can be refurbished and maintained.

But ILFC Chief Executive Henri Courpron told Reuters that the situation on the ground remained unresolved.

"We have made legal and political progress but people are not following instructions from the government," Courpron said in a telephone interview. "We have to stop this hostage situation."

He did not say which Indian authorities or people he held responsible for failing to apply the court's decision.

Ultimately, ILFC wants to fly the Airbus(EAD.PA) aircraft out of India to allow them to be used by other operators. But that would require the consent of Indian authorities.

For now, the planes are sitting idle in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai.

Kingfisher's financial difficulties have left the airline's fleet grounded since October.

Germany's DVB Bank(DVBG.F) said in December it had sued India's aviation regulator and Kingfisher to have two planes it financed for the troubled carrier de-registered, a possible first step toward recouping its funds.

The two disputes are seen as an important test of an international agreement known as the Cape Town convention, designed to make it more attractive for leasing companies to invest by duplicating repossession rights available in the United States when airlines default on lease payments.

Courpron said he expected the sale of a majority of ILFC to a Chinese consortium by its owner, U.S. insurer AIG, to go ahead as planned in the second quarter, dismissing doubts expressed by some delegates at a Florida aviation conference that it would.

About 38 percent of the audience at an industry panel predicted in a straw poll that the Chinese sale would not go ahead, but Courpron said ILFC was solely focused on it. (Reporting by Tim Hepher and Karen Jacobs; Editing by Alwyn Scott and Dan Grebler)
