Moving Back to India After Living in Canada and the USA

Moving Back to India After Living in Canada and the USA

Here is What I learned from moving back to India from Canada and USA

What I Learned from Moving Back to India After Living in Canada and the USA

After spending several Weeks in Canada and the USA, and Few Years in Sri Lanka, when moving back to India was both a challenging and enlightening experience.

Here are some of the key lessons I’ve learned:

Domestic help

The first difference between India and US is the ease and affordability of having a domestic help in their home country.

The of the cost of labour being cheap, the convenience is undeniable - an 15-20 extra hours each week as working couple is a luxury tough to imagine back in the US,

Traffic

Traffic in India is not necessarily worse than it is downtown Colombo, New York or San Francisco, but it is certainly more unpredictable and irritating. I  don’t see a solution to this problem in the near future.

Digital convenience

India is far superior when it comes to digital convenience, thanks to a host of quick commerce platforms that can deliver everything from groceries to makeup in 30 minutes.

Sure, the US has Instacart & DoorDash, but the intra-city logistics here are far superior & efficient.

Personal Connections

For the couple, one major difference between India and the US is cultural. “Culturally, as an Indian, I found it challenging to make deep connections in the US—beyond coffee meetups, drinks, or the usual work/sports talk.

Digital Payments

The much-touted digital payments infrastructure of India wins hands-down vs the US. “Apple Pay and UPI are comparable from user experience standpoint,” wrote Nayrhit. However, the real difference between the two platforms is that “UPI is free and a part of government infrastructure - whereas in Apple Pay, there is a  5% of transaction volume which flows into private players.”

Orderly Queues

In India, lines at counters, coffee shops, security checks and QSRs can be really chaotic, sometimes very irritating.

Food

Both countries are winners when it comes to food. “Coming back to Dosas & Biryanis from PB&J & Burgers is a relief. Though - I do sometimes miss the variety of cheese, bread & desserts in India.

Outdoor Activities

For people who love the outdoors, the Canada and US has a decided advantage over India.  If You or Kids  cannot live without hiking, biking or love frequenting beaches, you will not be very Happy” in India. But What ever is there are pretty cheap here.

Adaptability is Key:

The pace of life, cultural nuances, and ways of doing business are different in every country. Coming back to India required me to be adaptable and open-minded. It's about embracing change rather than resisting it.

Reconnecting with Roots:

Being back in India has given me a renewed sense of connection to my roots. There’s something deeply fulfilling about being close to family, traditions, and the vibrant culture that I grew up with.

Professional Growth Opportunities:

The Indian market is dynamic and rapidly growing. I've found that there's a wealth of opportunity here for innovation and leadership. It's a different playing field, but one that’s full of potential.

Work-Life Balance:

The concept of work-life balance takes on a different meaning in different parts of the world. In India, I’ve learned to balance my professional commitments with a rich personal life, cherishing the moments with family and friends.

Patience and Resilience:

Navigating the differences in infrastructure, public services, and day-to-day conveniences taught me patience and resilience. It’s been a journey of learning to adjust and thrive in a different environment.

The Power of Community:

In India, there is a strong sense of community. People are always willing to help each other, and this creates a supportive network that makes the transition smoother and more meaningful.

All I wanna to be improve in India now

My Vision for a Better India

After moving back to India, I've been reflecting on what I hope to see improve in the country. Here are some key areas where I believe we have room for growth:

Reducing Corruption:

Corruption remains a major hurdle in India’s development. To foster a fair and transparent system, it’s crucial that we hold accountable those who misuse their power. Together, we can build a more honest and ethical society.

Moving Beyond “WA FB University”:

Social media platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook have become the go-to sources of information for many. It’s essential to promote critical thinking and encourage people to seek credible, verified information rather than relying on rumors and misinformation.

Improving Traffic and Infrastructure:

Traffic congestion is a daily struggle in many Indian cities. Investing in better infrastructure, public transportation, and sustainable urban planning can significantly enhance our quality of life and reduce the environmental impact.

Enhancing Connectivity:

Whether it's digital connectivity or road networks, improving connectivity across the country can drive economic growth and ensure that even the most remote areas are not left behind. A well-connected India is a stronger India.

Becoming More LGBTQ+ Friendly:

India has made progress in LGBTQ+ rights, but there's still a long way to go toward true acceptance and equality. We need to foster an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feels safe, respected, and valued.

These changes won’t happen overnight, but with collective effort and a commitment to progress, I’m hopeful we can work together to build a better, more inclusive India for everyone.

Moving back has been a significant transition, but it's been filled with growth, learning, and new experiences.

For anyone considering such a move, I encourage you to keep an open heart and mind—you'll be surprised at what you discover about yourself and the world around you.

Happy Landings …
