AOPA Announces Flying Club Initiative

At AOPA Summit last week, AOPA announced a plan to help grow the national network of flying clubs, an initiative that is one of the first launched by the newly formed Center to Advance the Pilot Community. (See our story on the reach that flying clubs can have.) The goal is not only to create new clubs but to foster the growth and interoperability of existing clubs as well.

Head of the center, Adam Smith, says that the research shows an overwhelmingly positive impact clubs have on the GA community. “More than half of all active pilots are past or present members of a flying club and virtually all of them consider club membership as a positive experience,” he said.  “Flying clubs are an under-recognized part of aviation that deserves the Center’s support and encouragement.”

For the past several months AOPA has worked closely with successful clubs to create the plan. It established an advisory committee with 11 clubs from around the country and will work closely with the committee going forward. With 650 clubs operating currently, there seems to be a good foundation for their growth, but Smith says he hopes that the tools his organization can provide existing and newly created clubs will help them interact and share the secrets of what works and what doesn’t.

The goal, however, is easy to articulate, said Smith: “To help build a stronger community in which more people earn pilot certificates, pilots are more active, and the flying lifetime of pilots is extended.”

Sant Shri Ji Asaram Ji Bapu wants panel to visit ashram for his deposition

Spiritual leader, Asaram Bapu has once again tried to avoid appearing before the justice DK Trivedi commission, this time by citing some unheard-of reasons. The guru has said that there is apprehension of violence at the office of the commission if he goes there for cross examination. Instead, he has offered the commission to visit his ashram or to conduct the cross examination through video conference, for which he is ready to bear the expenses.

Bapu, his son Narayan Sai and other disciples of the Asaram Ashram are facing judicial inquiry from Gujarat high court’s retired judge, justice DK Trivedi over the mysterious deaths of two students of the Asaram Gurukul, Dipesh and Abhishek, in 2008.

The commission had first issued summons in this regard in April 2011 to Asaram and his son but they had repeatedly failed to appear before the panel citing one or the other reason.

On Thursday, Asaram’s lawyers, BM Gupta and Chandrashekhar Gupta have moved another such application stating there is strong apprehension of violence by some anti-social elements.
“We have moved the plea on Thursday and its hearing will be held on October 23,” said the counsel for Asaram.

In his application, the spiritual leader has given three options to the commission – to appoint a representative to record his statement, the commission be shifted to his ashram in Sabarmati or the examination be recorded through video conferencing.

Furnishing reasons to not appear before the commission, Asaram has cited two incidents of major violence that broke out between his disciples and the public after the death of the two minors came to light. One incident was right after the deaths in July 2008 and the second took place during when his followers were carrying out a rally at Gandhinagar in 2009.

In July 2008, the state government had announced setting up of the commission following public outrage over the death of cousins, Dipesh and Abhishek after their bodies were found on the Sabarmati riverbed, not very far from the ashram. Parents of the victims have since alleged involvement of black magic by Asaram behind the death of the kids.

Pilot Killed in Aeropro CZ A240 Plane Crash Identified as Capt Andrew Hayden

The Pilot killed in a plane crash after departing from Half Moon Bay Monday morning was identified as the 75-year-old Florida man that the plane was registered to, according to the San Mateo County coroner's office.

Captain Andrew Hayden, of Punta Gorda, Fla., a former U.S. Navy SEAL, was killed when his single-engine Aeropro CZ A240 crashed near Seal Cove shortly after departing from the Half Moon Bay Airport for Marana Regional Airport near Tucson, Ariz., around 5:50 a.m. Monday, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

The plane was registered to Hayden, who was the only person in the plane, according to officials. Cause of death has not been confirmed, but the coroner's investigation suggests Hayden may have died before the plane crashed.

Hayden's wife said he had intended to make a fuel stop in Apple Valley, Calif., and she reported the aircraft missing when it did not show up on schedule at Marana, according to Gregor.

After a search effort led by the U.S. Coast Guard and aided by the Civil Air Patrol and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, a ground-based search crew found the wreckage around noon Tuesday, about 400 yards west of the Half Moon Bay airport, Gregor said. FAA investigators were at the scene Tuesday, and National Transportation Safety Board investigators were expected to arrive today.

The Cloud Business Case: Are Expected Cost Savings Realistic ?

According to Claranet Product Director Martin Saunders, cloud computing is not a cheaper alternative to on-premise server. However, cloud computing services do make up for that disadvantage. According to Saunders, cloud computing isn’t about purchasing hardware and infrastructure only. Usually, companies and individuals only compare the cost of on-premise server to the cost of cloud server. In the minds of these entities, an on-premise server will depreciate itself in 3 years while the cloud computing server will be treated as a continuous expenditure. The costs of electricity, labor, and staff training as well as personnel requirement are often left out of the picture.

According to Microsoft Chief Technology Officer for Cloud Services Ron Fraser, oftentimes the cloud is marketed as a cost-saving device and that the Chief Information Officer is tasked to map out a cloud computing strategy. However, cloud services providers are now talking to Chief Financial Officers and Chief Marketing Officers. From the internal perspective, cloud computing is about portfolio application management, risk assessments, and probable cost savings. On the other hand, the external perspective deals about the cloud computing economics. According to Fraser, there is a basic and important move to equalize entry to the economies of scale which means that a small-scale business can have the same access to cloud computing as the global and diversified companies at the same price.

Cloud computing costs are now the subject of scrutiny because the European Commission is implementing a new strategy to increase and hasten cloud computing use within member countries. According to the European Union, entities which move their operations to the clouds achieve at least 10% cost savings. The new strategy is expected to rake in as much as 160 billion in Gross Domestic Product as well as create 2.5 million fresh jobs by 2020.

On the hand, Anthony Miller of TechMarketView is skeptical about the expected growth in jobs as well as revenues because cloud computing technologies are deflationary. According to him, they anticipate a reduction in IT services and software spending in the UK until 2015 and that there won’t be much improvement up to 2019.

In the United States of America, the General Services Administration, after internal audit, can’t justify the $15 million savings it claimed the Federal Government can save when it pushed for the adoption of Google’s cloud computing services for collaboration and email. The results of the audit have been released by the agency’s inspector general. According to the audit report, the expected cost savings can’t be verified. There were also unclear or lacking performance measures and that the agency didn’t inventory its applications which had been shifted to the clouds. Therefore, the inspector general had no way of verifying whether the intended savings were really met.

According to John Foley of InformationWeek, he did bring up the issue as early as April 2010 before the General Services Administration transferred their email applications to the clouds. According to him, the evidence would be “fuzzy”. However, according to General Services, it had $2.9 million savings since it implemented its migration to Google’s clouds. The savings comprise about $1 million on support, services, and hardware and the other $1.8 million is saved on software licensing. According to Foley, the importance of project management and business planning must be stressed when organizations move to their operations to the clouds and that these entities should learn from the General Services Administration’s experience.

Searching for alternative investment ideas?

Many expats contactmeand ask about the availability of ‘‘alternative’’ investments. Their aimis to diversify away from traditional asset classes in equities, commodities, bonds, exchangetraded funds and mutual funds.

There are a number of reasons why investors seek out alternative opportunities. Some prefer to own physical property, either individually or as part of a group; others like the fact that they have a physical asset of some sort. Many also like the idea that whatever happens to global equity markets, their specific holding will be unaffected, giving them true diversification.

Alternative investments are usually (but not always) non-correlated, which means that they have no direct relation to equity, commodity, bond or property markets. Let's consider some ideas that could be suitable for diversification of your nest egg.

FIXED RETURNS: Some investments offer fixed returns to investors over specific periods of time. These are usually financial funds that have a niche in their market. Initial investment amounts are relatively low and returns are above average. While there is higher risk than for a bank deposit, the returns are very good when compared to bank rates.

Invested into a fund, the returns are established at the outset so you know what to expect at maturity. Periods are also set at one to five years locked in, and as the fixed period lengthens, the rate becomes more attractive. Returns are available in most major currencies _ the table (top, right) offers some examples.

A limited number of fixed two-year funds are also available. These require a much higher financial commitment (A$500,000 or 15.9 million baht) but pay an even higher fixed annual return, as the table to the right shows.

STUDENT ACCOMMODATION: This asset class is a well known favourite among many investors. Known for steady returns, this is an asset related to property. However, it is specialist in that it invests in university accommodation units in popular tertiary education towns and cities across the UK. This is not property held for capital appreciation but rather an income-producing asset.

These units are now singly available to individual investors. You purchase the property or a number of property units and own an asset that will offer you capital appreciation. However, the main object is to primarily own an income-producing asset.

The units are let to university students and the income gives returns between 8% and 10% per year net of all costs. Further advantages are that the investment is hands-off as far as management is concerned. The developers or the universities themselves manage the properties, find the student tenants, collect the rents, maintain the properties, deal with building management and return you the net rental after costs.

This is a very good long-term income producing asset. Purchase prices vary from around 45,000 to 60,000 (2.22 to 2.96 million baht) and there is no financing available. Thus outright purchase is the only way to own these units at present.

SELF-STORAGE: This is another property-related idea with assets based in the UK. Self-storage has taken off in the last few years and there are a number of complexes with a variety of units of varying sizes. These are once again for sale and you purchase your own mixture of units on a leasehold basis. They vary from 2.3 square metres at 3,750, to 18.6 sq m at 30,000.

Once you own the units they are let through a management company, making this once again a hands-off investment as far as management is concerned. Returns will vary but average 8% to 12% per year, increasing the longer you own them.

Units can be resold back to the management company after six years at the same price at which you purchased them, making this similar to a bank deposit. However, you may also sell your units privately at any time on the open market.

As with student accommodation, why would you wish to sell these assets when they are producing valuable income for your future? As part of your succession plan, these units and student accommodation units can be left to any beneficiary you so desire.

LEGAL LITIGATION FUNDING: These investments have emerged from the legal systems in more than one country, based mainly on legal cases pitting David against Goliath, so to speak. Smaller organisations often have limited resources to fight genuine legal cases against giant organisations, which can drag out litigation for years. This means that smaller firms often either give up or simply do not bother.

A legal litigation fund is a financier of the legal costs of such cases. The fund assesses the viability of the case and, if positive, then agrees to provide financing to the plaintiff. In turn this loan is to be insured by the borrower, usually through Lloyds of London, the most respected insurance organisation in the world.

If the case is lost the insurance pays the loan back to the fund, making the capital of the fund protected. If the case is won then the loan is repaid plus a share of the damages awarded by the court.

Because the cases are assessed carefully there are usually more wins than losses and the funds make profits, allowing them to offer high fixed or variable returns, depending on the fund structure. In one example there is a minimum guaranteed return of 15% per year plus a bonus based on the cases won at maturity of the investment after a fixed period of three years.

This type of alternative holding is for the investor who wishes to make very good returns in the shorter term and redeem capital after three years. Thus this is more of a growth investment than student accommodation and self-storage, which are designed to offer steady income returns over longer periods.

Alternative investments certainly have a place in any overall financial life plan. For many they are already in use via the master investment vehicle already in place for you as an expat. If this is not the case, have a word with your financial adviser to find out why. Alternatively, why not have a financial health check with another adviser to see if you are getting value for money?

Next week we will look at further alternative investment ideas.
