Many enterprises cite the number of applications and databases that exist in the cloud, but that's only half of the story

Services hold key to cloud computing success

Cloud computing is, at its core, a new take on an old model (timesharing) for consuming IT resources, but for many enterprises, it requires a new architecture based on services rather than apps. As cloud computing evolves, we'll become more accustomed to viewing our tech needs through the prism of services, but right now, it's a departure for many in enterprise IT as they move from single monolithic applications to collections of widely distributed services, cloud and otherwise.

Most cloud-based systems are sets of services hosted in remote sites, mixed and matched with internal systems to form a business application. Thus, the best way to measure utilization of cloud computing resources is to count services, not applications.

[ Get the no-nonsense explanations and advice you need to take real advantage of cloud computing in InfoWorld editors' 21-page Cloud Computing Deep Dive PDF special report. | Stay up on the cloud with InfoWorld's Cloud Computing Report newsletter. ]

Take a simple inventory application: It may reside on a traditional database (such as Oracle) within the enterprise, while the services that process the data exist within Amazon EC2. Moreover, the user interface may live on a PaaS provider such as Google App Engine.

While this may seem complex, it's normal for cloud-based applications to be spread across internal resources and a public cloud or even several public clouds. The key, then, to understanding utilization is to look at the number of cloud-based services leveraged by the application.

As enterprises migrate to cloud computing, bits and pieces of an application will make the move, rather than the complete application. For instance, a company could leverage a service from a public cloud provider to provide stock price data for an application or for storage purposes.

Over time, other application services will find their way in public clouds, which often provide the best value as a platform. While many enterprises will talk about whole system migration, most will take service-by-service baby steps. That's the way we should measure the movement to cloud computing.

India Aviation Regulator DGCA Orders Kingfisher Airlines to Stop Selling Tickets

India's aviation regulator Tuesday asked Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. to stop selling tickets, soon after the cash-strapped carrier resumed bookings for flights starting this weekend.

Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said Kingfisher won't be allowed to sell tickets until the Directorate General of Civil Aviation is satisfied with the carrier's plans on carrying on operations.

"They are not going to start flying again unless they have got the DGCA's permission" and the regulator is convinced about the airline's safety and financial stability, Mr. Singh said on the sidelines of a conference.

The minister's comments came after Kingfisher resumed selling tickets on its Web site and also through travel portals MakeMyTrip.com., Cleartrip.com and Ixigo.com.

Early last week, the airline--controlled by liquor mogul Vijay Mallya--suspended ticket sales and flight operations after pilots, technicians and engineers went on strike to protest against non-payment of salaries since March.

Concerned about the strike, especially by engineers who certify aircraft before flying, the regulator served Kingfisher a notice Friday, asking it to state by Oct. 20 why it believes its license shouldn't be cancelled.

A message on the airline's Web site says its flights will be subject to regulatory approval, but it didn't say how it will resume flights if its employees don't end their strike.

A spokesman for Kingfisher didn't respond to phone calls.

MakeMyTrip.com and Cleartrip.com stopped selling Kingfisher tickets later in the day. But ticket sales on the airline's Web site and through Ixigo.com are continuing.

In an emailed statement to Dow Jones Newswires Tuesday, MakeMyTrip Ltd. said it stopped ticket sales following the regulator's "comments on the operations and subsequent uncertainty on flights."

An executive at Cleartrip.com declined to comment, while executives at Ixigo.com couldn't be contacted.

Other travel companies have refrained from selling the airline's tickets. Yatra.com's Web site, for instance, showed the portal is "not displaying Kingfisher flights due to uncertainty of their operations."

Late Monday, Keyur Joshi, co-founder and group chief operating officer of MakeMyTrip, said the portal refunded passengers 600 million rupees to 700 million rupees ($11.5 million to $13.4 million) a day last week because of Kingfisher suspending its flights.

Kingfisher--named after India's highest-selling brand of beer--hasn't posted a net profit since it began operations in May 2005 and has $1.5 billion in debt. It owes millions of dollars to aircraft-leasing companies, suppliers, oil companies and to the government in taxes.

Financial woes have forced the airline to cut operations to less than a fourth of its 400-flights-a-day schedule last year. Before it suspended flights last week, it operated 12 planes, down from 64 last year. It is now India's smallest carrier by market share, down from its second-biggest a year earlier.

Tuesday, shares of Kingfisher fell 5% to 12 rupees on the Bombay Stock Exchange, where the benchmark index rose 0.5%.

The company's shares have fallen by 5%, the daily trading limit set for Kingfisher, in each of the past seven sessions.

The shares have lost much of the gains they made since Sept. 14, when the Indian government announced it would allow foreign airlines to buy stakes of up to 49% in Indian carriers.

Kingfisher had lost 69% of its market value in 2011 and a further 49% between Jan. 2 and Sept. 14 this year.

Five Companies that May Be Recession-Proof

While it may be a tough road ahead for many companies that are bracing for what some experts predict will be the next recession, five corporations are sitting pretty, with not much to worry about as the fiscal cliff closes in. According to Wall Street 24-7 these companies are safe bets for investors who are looking for products immune to economic hardships.

Anheuser-Busch (BUD) If there’s one thing a financial meltdown won’t slow down, it’s America’s beer drinkers. The brewery behemoth’s sales actually grew as the country spiraled into a recession in 2008, CNNmoney reports With shares around $90, Anheuser-Busch has $144 billion market value, and is still growing through acquisitions.

McDonald’s  (MCD) Investors can always rely on the golden arches to come through when times are hard and pocketbooks are thin. With its highly popular dollar menu, it’s no surprise that McDonalds proved to do well through the recession.  With a $92 billion market value, Its 3.4% dividend yield trumps most food and dining stocks.

American Water Works  (AWK) The water-supply business is a not-so- surprisingly stable industry. American Water Works, the largest water utility in the country, is currently at 6.5 billion and is expected to grow more if it makes acquisitions or if it privatizes more municipal-owned water operations. The share price is at about $37.25 and the 52-week high is $39.38.
Dollar Tree  (DLTR) This one is bitter sweet, as it may not reflect positively on the economy if consumer spending increases at dollar stores around the country. Regardless, this discount store giant was a prime example of a company and stock that held up during the recession.  Dollar Tree trades around $48.00, and the consensus target of $54.33 implies upside of about 13% from the current share price.

Pfizer  (PFE) One of the nation’s leading pharmaceutical companies is predicted to continue strong this year, regardless of election outcomes, or a wider degree of health care coverage under Obamacare. In a not-so-stable economic environment, a stable industry like pharmaceuticals, with wide profit margins and  large payoffs, is a safe bet for investors. Pfizer’s dividend of about 3.4% and its $25.50 share price offer an implied total return of about 8% to the $26.86 consensus price target. Read more at Wall Street 24-7

ROMNEY SLAMS DEFENSE CUTS  The Mitt Romney who showed up to last Wednesday’s debate hasn’t slowed down and continues to slam the President on defense cuts scheduled to take place at the beginning of next year. At a campaign stop today at the Virginia Military Institute, Romney slams sequestration, asserting that the United States cannot help its allies or defeat its enemies in the Middle East “when defense spending is being arbitrarily and deeply cut,” Politico’s Austin Wright reports.  Read more at Politico

WASHINGTON POST- TAX CUT HOLIDAY MUST END  The Washington Post editorial board says extending the payroll tax cut would harm the U.S.’ fiscal credibility. “The tax cut was adding to the federal deficit each year. To extend the cut once again risks converting a temporary stimulus into a permanent feature of the tax code, so embedded in the public’s expectations that it becomes impossible to undo.”  Read more at The Washington Post

IMF: DO SOMETHING! Not convinced that members of Congress are doing anything effective to reduce the chances of sending the country over the fiscal cliff and possibly tumbling into the next recession, International Monetary Fund’s First Deputy Managing Director David Lipton told Reuters that the “United States needs to do more to show it is trying to address the expiring tax cuts and automatic spending reductions that will hit early next year unless Congress acts.

CANTOR CAUGHT FLIP FLOPPING After House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s Democratic challenger Wayne Powell accused the Majority Leader of flip flopping on his position of sequestration, the nonpartisan political fact checker Politifact jumped on the case and found that Cantor had indeed changed his position and distanced himself “from a situation he helped create. We rate that a full flop.”

Holiday firm Thomas Cook is planning to cut 430 Jobs In USA due to Global Recession

21700

Holiday firm Thomas Cook has confirmed it is wielding the axe again as it continues to turn its business around.

The company is planning to cut 430 jobs which it says will "enhance the financial performance of our UK airline, improving profitability and operational efficiency".

The people affected will include pilots and cabin crew whose futures were already threatened by a partnership deal with easyJet.

Thomas Cook started to shed posts and planes from its fleet last year as it battled to recover from a near-financial collapse that saw it eventually take a new £200m loan and extend its financial arrangements amid the slowdown in consumer spending.

The Unite union, which represents 400 engineers and 1,000 cabin crew out of the 2,700-strong workforce, said it will begin talks on Wednesday in an attempt to save as many jobs as possible

"At present, details of the threatened job losses are sketchy - we are not even sure which airports that Thomas Cook flies from will be worst hit," Unite's regional officer, Helen Osgood, said

"This is shocking news to a loyal and hard-working staff at the holiday company. Their future at this time is our prime concern.

“Our talks with management will be at Thomas Cook’s offices in Manchester, following a meeting of our reps."

Thomas Cook's statement said: "We are proposing to reduce the UK fleet from 35 to 31 aircraft, returning 4 planes to the lessors at the end of their lease term with the resultant cost saving.

"Our in-house airline will continue to serve all of our key routes and in the last year alone transported over 6.8 million passengers globally to their chosen destination.

"Regrettably these proposals, if implemented, will have an inevitable impact on our people and we have today entered a period of consultation with our employees, with the expectation that approximately 430 roles will be impacted."

The travel company said it would work with the staff affected to support them.
