Why is it that people say that an MBA degree is not of much use if it is not from an IIM?

Why is it that people say that an MBA degree is not of much use if it is not from an IIM?

Why is it that people say that an MBA degree is not of much use if it is not from an IIM?

A Master of Business Administration (MBA; also, Master's in Business Administration) is a postgraduate degree focused on business administration. The core courses in an MBA program cover various areas of business administration such as accounting, applied statistics, human resources, business communication, business ethics, business law, strategic management, business strategy, finance, managerial economics, management, entrepreneurship, marketing, supply-chain management, and operations management in a manner most relevant to management analysis and strategy. It originated in the United States in the early 20th century when the country industrialized and companies sought scientific management.

MBA candidates work for months, if not years, to be accepted into an MBA programme. If they are enrolled in a programme, however, the stresses of daily life take over, and students have no time to consider how to get the best out of their education.

  •  IIMs have created a greater value for the PGP programmes and this value is considered much higher than many other MBA programmes across the world. Now it is a general perception that PGDM from IIM commands a higher market value than an MBA degree and due to this fact, students want to get a diploma from an IIM rather than a degree.

  • An MBA degree is of no use if you do a job and be an employee even after doing MBA. The whole purpose of an MBA is to learn how to be an entrepreneur. A knowledge is knowledge be it from IIM or any local school. A person who doesn't know how to make use of the knowledge will still be an employee even after doing MBA from IIM. And a person who can make use of the knowledge can become an entrepreneur and gain success even after doing MBA from a local school or not even from any school. Not every IIM graduate is successful in his job I must tell you. Only the few talented ones reach very high salary positions. Therefore, it is the talent and not the degree that makes you successful. Rest of them remain either unsatisfied or unsuccessful or frustrated due to high expectations due to IIM degree. Your sense of Success or unsuccess depends upon your satisfaction and contentment. And who says only the IIMs can reach a position of a CEO or a high-level director in a company? There are more successful companies and more successful CEOs and directors than the total number of IIM graduates till date and more successful companies lead by non-IIM graduate CEOs and directors too than the total number of IIM graduates till date. Also, i must also tell you that almost every founder of a big and successful company where such IIM graduates and other institutional graduates work, do not have or didn't have an MBA or an IIM degree.

  • Einstein studied at home and his mother taught him lessons at home when he was expelled from the school and no other school would accept him. As a result, all the schools all over the world now teach Einstein's theories and his discoveries.

  • MARK ZUCKERBERG a university dropout, STEVE JOBS a university drop out…DHIRUBHAI AMBANI not even a college dropout, he ran away from the school to work as an attendant at a petrol pump in turkey and had a vision of owning a Petrochemical giant company, rest is history. And saving the best for the last, ELON MUSK…

  • So, it is not the degree or the school that determines the use of it. It is the ability to make use of the knowledge that determines success.

  • This is absolute nonsense. IIMs especially the top 6 are excellent institutions, though there are over 30 other exceptional B-Schools in India.

  • Less than 20% of CEOs from Top 100 companies in India are from IIMs. So clearly if they were so good then they should have garnered at least 50% of the CEO positions in India. So, 80%+ CEOs come from B-schools other than IIMs.

  • I know of several IIM graduates who have been absolute failures and could not survive in the competitive world of business and ended up becoming teachers or joining CAT coaching centers. So please remove this notion that IIMs are the end all and be all of management.

  •  It is not how you start the game but how you finish the game. The value you deliver to your organization will result in your rise and not your IIM tag.

  • From an international perspective, I can tell that one of students who got an IIM-B offer letter left to join Universal Business School as the PGDM was not recognized as a legitimate Degree by his company and they funded his education only because he got an MBA Degree from a reputed International University and he ended up getting a Rs.1 crore salary. This example clearly states that a quality student will get an amazing package in any good b-school not necessarily an IIM.

  • It is the quality of the student that makes the B-school and gives it an amazing reputation, not vice - versa. I can challenge that if any good b-school gets IIM quality students, they would do an equally amazing job.
