A common list of the failures of Abraham Lincoln (along with a few successes) is:

That looks like a pretty glum résumé, making you wonder how he ever made it to the top. But when you really think of it, to run for office or high positions so many times, you have to have something on the ball and have more successes than meet the eye.

Chronology of Mr Abraham Lincoln's career

Lincoln actually was considered a fairly successful politician in Illinois and a leader of the Whig party in his state, as well as a successful lawyer. The true chronology of his career is as follows.

1831

At age 22, he lost his job because his father wanted to move the family.

1832

At age 23, he was elected company Captain of Illinois militia in the Black Hawk War. Because of his Black Hawk War involvement, he did not spend sufficient time campaigning and was defeated in running for the Illinois State Legislature. Note that he was only 23-years old.

1834

At age 25, he started a store in New Salem, Illinois with a partner. He was appointed postmaster of New Salem and deputy surveyor of Sangamon County. Unfortunately, his partner died causing the business to fail. Lincoln later paid off the whole debt for the failed business. Then he was elected to the Illinois State House of Representatives. That certainly seems like a busy and successful year for someone only 25.

1835

Lincoln's sweetheart, Ann Rutledge, died.

1836

At age 27, Lincoln reportedly had a nervous breakdown. (Many scholars believe this to be a fabrication of William Herndon made after Lincoln had died. Herndon had been a law partner of Lincoln, but they did not get along. Considering Lincoln's other accomplishments that year, a nervous breakdown was unlikely.)

Lincoln was re-elected to Illinois State Legislature and led the Whig political party delegation in moving Illinois state capital from Vandalia to Springfield. He also received a license to practice law in Illinois state courts and became law partner of John T. Stuart.

1838

At age 29, he was nominated for Illinois House Speaker by Whig caucus but did not win the election, because the Whigs could not garner enough votes. He then served as the Whig Floor Leader.

1839

Lincoln was chosen presidential elector for the first Whig convention. He also was admitted to practice law in U.S. Circuit Court.

1840

At age 31, he was re-elected to Illinois State Legislature. He also argued his first case before Illinois Supreme Court.

1841

He established a new law practice with Stephen T. Logan

1842

At age 33, he was re-elected to Illinois State Legislature. Lincoln was also admitted to practice law in U.S. District Court. He was becoming a very successful lawyer, as well as a popular legislator.

1843

At age 34, Lincoln wanted to run for Congress but for the sake of Whig party unity, agreed to hold off until 1846 to allow other party candidates to represent the state. Thus, he really was not defeated for nomination for Congress, as stated in the list of his "failures".

1844

Lincoln established his own law practice with William H. Herndon as junior partner. (After Lincoln had been assassinated, Herndon claimed that Lincoln had suffered a nervous breakdown in 1836. This apparently was an effort to get back at Lincoln's widow.)

1846

At age 37, Lincoln won the election for U.S. Congress.

1848

At age 39, Lincoln's term in office was up and was not a candidate for Congress, per an agreed-upon arrangement among the Whigs. He did however try to get an appointment as Commissioner of the General Land Office at Washington D.C. but didn't get appointed.

1849

Lincoln was admitted to practice law in U.S. Supreme Court. He was offered appointment as governor of the Oregon Territory, but he declined the position.
1854

He was elected to the Illinois State Legislature but declined the seat to run for U.S. Senate.

1855

At age 46, Lincoln ran for the U.S. Senate but then willingly deferred his Whig votes, as a political move, to allow Trumbull to win the seat. It was a intentional move and not a defeat as the list claims.

1856

At age 47, Lincoln received votes in the Philadelphia Republican convention for the vice presidency. He did not campaign and was not running for the office at that time, so he did not gain the nomination.

1858

At age 49, he ran for the U.S. Senate and won the popular vote. However, in those days the state legislatures selected the Senate representative. Usually, they would select the winner of the election, but the 1858 Illinois State Legislature chose Lincoln's rival, Stephen Douglas, to remain in office.

In 1913, President Woodrow Wilson eliminated that practice with the 17th amendment to the constitution.

Thus, Lincoln ran for the Senate and was defeated.

1859

Lincoln had a very successful and lucrative law practice but hesitantly agreed to run for the presidency.

1860

At age 51, Lincoln became president of the United States.

Purpose of failure list

Abraham Lincoln had a very successful career up to becoming president. But for anyone trying different things, there can be a number setbacks. For some reason, writers exaggerated the setbacks or defeats, in order to use them to inspire people to overcome life's difficulties with Lincoln as a model.

The failure list is great for motivational seminars and graduation speeches, but it is far from reality.

Two are killed in Air Plane crash near Suffolk Airport in USA

A small, single-engine experimental plane crashed in a field Saturday, killing the pilot and a passenger.

The crash occurred about a third of a mile west of a runway at Suffolk Executive Airport, roughly three miles southwest of the city’s downtown.

The aircraft had attempted to land several times when it crashed, killing both occupants on impact, according to the Virginia State Police.

The plane is registered to an individual from Davidsonville, Md., police stated. Both victims were male and neither has been positively identified. Maryland State Police are helping in the identification process as well as with the notification of family members.

Emergency crews were dispatched at 1:01 p.m. Saturday and were on the scene in seven minutes, said Diana Klink, a city spokeswoman. The crash site lies near Southside Trailer Court, in the 1000 block of Carolina Road.

“I just heard a big boom, like a big shotgun sound,” said Tony Fowler, 21, who lives about a half mile from the crash site.

It sounded “sort of like a bomb going off,” said Scott Proctor Jr., 12, who was in his room at his home on Carolina Road.

Gabrielle Looney, 20, who lives in a trailer only a few hundred yards from the crash site, said the sound of the impact led her to think “it was going to be a tractor-trailer crash over on Carolina Road.”

The 16th annual “Festival of Flight,” a two-day, fly-in event sponsored by the Virginia Aviation Council, a nonprofit group that promotes aviation education, began Saturday morning at Suffolk Executive Airport. Ray Batton, the president of the council, said the plane and its occupants had not registered and were unknown to event organizers.

Registration for the event is available online or on the field, according to a program for the event, which is described as “2 days of Airplanes & Family Fun from Ultralights to Multiengine!”

While the event has drawn hundreds of aircraft at some of the yearly events, this weekend’s festival drew “way less than 100 planes,” Batton said.

“Our event is totally weather-dependent,” said DeWitt Whittington, a spokesman for the group who said the festival is geared for “fair-weather flying.”

Low clouds and windy conditions contributed to make Saturday “a terrible day” for the kinds of light aircraft that tend to come to the event, Whittington said.

The event continues today.

SBI to Auction Capt Gopinath's Assets to recover dues

After moving decisively against the promoters of Kingfisher Airlines Ltd to recover a part of their dues, State Bank of India (SBI) is now planning to auction some of the properties Captain G R Gopinath had pledged with the bank to recover a part of the dues of Rs 210 crore.

The auction has been scheduled for May 16 and 31. SBI on Friday put out ads in all major newspapers announcing the dates. Gopinath’s properties include a bungalow here, in the name of his wife. Gopinath and his wife are guarantors for the loan.

SBI, along with a few other banks, had given loans to Gopinath for Deccan Cargo, a venture he started in 2009, a few years after he sold Air Deccan to Kingfisher Airlines. It is understood Axis Bank among the lenders with significant exposure to Deccan Cargo, Gopinath’s venture.

Gopinath had started with Deccan Cargo, aiming to deliver cargo to and from tier-II and tier-III towns into major cities, hoping to ride the potential the segment offered. Reliance Industries’ Mukesh Ambani had made an investment of about Rs 135 crore into this venture. Industry experts say the execution of the strategy did not fall into place for Deccan Cargo, owing to which Gopinath couldn’t carry the venture business.

After the operations of the company were frozen, Gopinath had opted for corporate debt restructuring for its loans. However, this, too, did not progress due to doubts oh how Gopinath would boost operations after the restructuring. Subsequently, Gopinath tried to revive Deccan Charters, offering shuttle services in Gujarat through eight-seater aircraft. But after a promising start, this floundered due to low demand. Revenues in the traditional charter business started dwindling and Gopinath was forced to downsize and sell many of the aging Aircraft.

Cloud Computing to Dominate SME's ICT Spend

At a time when overall business growth in world has slowed significantly and the national GDP shows only a marginal rise the India small and medium business segment (SMEs, 1-999 employees) can be viewed as a beacon of hope. India SMEs show a 14 percent year-on-year rise in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) expenditures and their adoption of technology is likely to continue to increase.

This is a direct result of their need to utilize ICT tools to overcome nagging business challenges. An analysis of these markets reveals that small businesses are likely to marginally overtake their medium business compatriots vis-à-vis annual ICT spending growth rate. These findings have emerged from the 2013 India SME ICT & Cloud Services Tracker Overview study by New York-based Access Markets International (AMI) Partners, Inc.           

India SMEs have been a lucrative segment when it comes to ICT spends. With increased transparency and reach to the masses SMEs are looking at solutions to enhance their market share and get an edge over competition. Today an event organiser in a tier 2 city can effectively use the social media and technology to promote his brand and get more visibility. He can have a SCM and a CRM on a much smaller scale and leverage technology to escalate his business and workforce. Basic computing and networking hardware dominates the IT spending portfolio of India SMEs. This is especially true for the small business segment which is gradually enhancing their ICT backbone serving as a platform for future adoption of higher-end technology solutions”, said Dev Chakravarty, Research Manager at AMIIndia.

This is where Cloud computing has brought about a paradigm change in the ICT adoption pattern of SMEs worldwide. India SMEs are no exception to this statement. "Using AMI’s Global Market Forecast Model, the SME market sizing tool, AMI has found that expenditures on cloud-computing within India SME ICT portfolio are on the rise. These expenditures comprise almost 10 percent currently and are predicted to increase by a CAGR of 23 percent over the next five years”, added Chakravarty. It may not be an exaggeration to term cloud computing as a key future growth-enhancer in terms of India SME ICT adoption since cloud-based ICT solutions display greater future growth-trends compared to their on-premise cousins. 

There are many questions regarding cloud computing usage by India SMEs; e.g. - What are the larger spend components within the cloud? Which cloud categories will grow faster? AMI analysis finds that the top two spend-components within the SME cloud-portfolio are for website-related expenditures and Remotely Managed IT Services (RMITS). These SMEs have become much more aware of the benefits of hosting their own websites since it provides them multiple benefits such as better brand-building and cost-effective marketing to mention just two. A number of web-hosting firms have emerged to assist India SMEs in this endeavour. As mentioned RMITS is also an up and coming trend for these companies. Many India SMEs are indicating a greater preference for this alternative, sometimes in conjunction with the age-old on-premise service options. In the near future, IaaS and SaaS-based solutions such as Productivity, CRM and Business Intelligence are forecast to show considerable growth.  

Proprietors, dealers, SOHO, financial groups - fast adopter. Cloud computing has been instrumental in alleviating many problems that India SMEs face during ICT adoption - specifically those related to a lack of funds and non-availability of a dedicated ICT-workforce.  It has proven a boon to small businesses, for which it hits a particularly sweet spot. With cloud services, small businesses reap the benefits of not having to deploy physical infrastructure like file and e-mail servers, storage systems or shrink-wrapped software. Plus, the "anywhere, anytime" availability of these solutions, means hassle-free collaboration among business partners and employees using the ubiquitous browser. In fact a lot of today's small business technology needs can be fulfilled almost completely with cloud-based offerings through a single mobile device.

In cases of small financial groups like agents and consultants lot of applications and tools are offered by the larger players and there is a basic ICT setup requirement which an SME does not want to invest and get locked into. This is where service providers come into play and through their cloud offerings can make the services available at various pay packages mutually suitable.

No Cloud without Rain

Of course, cloud computing raises concerns about security, stability, and data ownership. Cloud computing adoption rates have been steadily increasing since 2009; however, there are concerns over efficiently managing disparate cloud services. No technology investment is fool proof; they are subject to outages that are beyond a business' control.

There have been numerous cases of complete breakdowns and such downtime stories serve as a sobering reminder that trusting your data and technology services to an off-site third-party places you at the mercy of that third-party's uptime reliability. Many businesses are countering that complete dependency by going with hybrid cloud solutions. For instance, companies will replicate data stored locally on a hard drive or NAS to their cloud services, offering SMBs the best of both worlds: local control and access to data and peace of mind that the data is backed up to the cloud. No one glove fits all. Depending on the nature of the business and service offerings one needs to make a calculated decision on the cloud solution and the best way it will enhance the business performance and become a revenue model too as they go ahead.

With cloud, mobile, social and big data advances all happening at once and at lightning speed, how will shifts in technology impact the way businesses are run? According to Ginni Rometty, the first female CEO of IBM, it will change everything. Ginni Rometty predicted that data will be the basis of competitive advantage going forward, calling it the "the next natural resource." She believes it will change how decisions are made, how value is created and how value is delivered. Here’s a look at what the future may hold.

Data analytics will revolutionise decision-making

"Many more decisions will be based on predictive elements versus gut instincts,"Rometty said. Even in the most scientifically oriented fields, she noted that decisions are still being made based on anchoring biases. In other words, leaders and managers interpret information through the lens of their subjective perspective and set of experiences. However, with the incoming “tsunami of information,” Rometty believes that those companies that are able to use data to their advantage will make better, more objective calls.

As an example, she cited IBM’s use of software analytics in its CRUSH (Criminal Reduction Utilizing Statistical History) initiative with the Memphis Police Department. Finding a correlation between rapes and outdoor pay phones, they decided to move the phones indoors, which ultimately contributed to a 30% reduction in crime.

Still, Rometty said that just because the technology exists and will become increasingly accurate, the shift will require new ways of thinking. “At the end of the day, it’s about mindset and culture,” she said.

The social network will drive value

“The social network will be the new production line in a company,” Rometty predicted. The primary benefit of new social platforms, she said, is that today’s knowledge workers have access to each other. In the near future, she believes “your value will not be what you know, but what you share.”

This social sharing shift will change the way businesses hire, who they hire and how they compensate workers, said Rometty. Employees will be rated by bosses, colleagues and even customers on the value of the information they create, she said, which could impact compensation.

A one-star rating would result in a one-star compensation range, just as a five-star rating would ensure five-star compensation. Like data analytics, more and varied input on each employee’s performance may create more objective pay models.

Consumer segments will cede to the individual

Technology shifts will also change the way businesses deliver value. “What you will see with rapid data and social sharing is the death of the average and the era of you,” Rometty said. Rather than meeting the needs of different consumer segments—geographic, age or income segmentation, for example—businesses will be able to truly serve the individual. "If you have a call center, it’s no longer about a script,” she said. "It’s about a dialogue.” What Rometty calls “the third wave of technology” may contribute to this individualized approach. In the first era of computing, computers counted. In the second, they could be programmed to perform instructions. In the next era, computers will learn by themselves, she said.
